And I loved your story about your childhood festivities. I wish we had such in Denmark. We are not especially patriotic.

I also think your expression about an “especially close connection with the holiday that falls nearest to our birthday”. My birthday is in the midst of Halloween and Christmas, and I cannot choose! I’ve loved Christmas for longer, since Halloween is quite new in Denmark, but I love Halloween very much too. So you might be right about that saying.

There is something special about it.

I was born on Thanksgiving Day (Canada’s, not the US version), and I do NOT have that fondness for Thanksgiving that you have for “your” holiday, Autumn! 🙂 I loathed Thanksgiving every year, as the holiday that stole my thunder. We would always have my grandparents over, have a big dinner (usually bone dry turkey and stuffing, lumpy gravy, bland mashed potatoes and some boiled veg – my mom is a TERRIBLE cook), and it was only about me in a tertiary way. When I was 17, I put my foot down. “It’s me or the turkey!” Now, we don’t celebrate Thanksgiving – I won! 🙂
