<p></p>

<blockquote class="wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>You will have to experiment and try things out for yourself and you will not be sure of what you are doing. That’s alright, you are feeling your way into the thing. ~ Emily Carr </p></blockquote>

<p>The card in today’s post is definitely one that I feel falls under the header of what (fellow) British Columbian and world-renowned early 20th-century artist <a href="https://www.gallery.ca/collection/artist/emily-carr">Emily Carr </a>was speaking about in the quote above.</p>

<p>I’m not going to lie, this isn’t my absolute favourite card I’ve ever made. However, I do not dislike it and the more time that passes since I created it, the more this spring themed project is growing on me.</p>

<p>Thus far, I don&#8217;t have a lot experience when it comes to using pencil crayons with stamped images – let alone ones on black cardstock.</p>

<p>In setting out to do so here, <strong>I knew that I wanted to go for a soft, chalkboard-like look to the way the pencil crayon colour lay on the black cardstock</strong>. Happily, I feel like that was achieved. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-2-683x1024.png" alt="Victorian Inspired Pencil Crayon on Black Cardstock Spring Greetings Card" class="wp-image-2522" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-2-683x1024.png 683w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-2-200x300.png 200w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-2-768x1152.png 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-2-400x600.png 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-2.png 800w" sizes="(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure></div>

<p>The inspiration for this card lay in springtime itself (with the colour palette here tapping squarely into <a href="http://sweetly-spooky-oversized-slimline-springoween-card-plus-what-is-springoween"><strong>Springoween</strong></a>) and in various Victorian design elements.</p>

<p>Make no bones about it, I am not saying this card is not authentically Victorian looking. It most certainly is not. But it was inspired by various styles, colours, and textures of that era.</p>

<p>Actually, when all was said and done and I stepped back to look at this card (something I do with all of my paper crafting projects, as I find it helps me gauge if I need to change and/or add anything before calling a given project complete), I was struck by how <strong>it looked both a bit 19th century and somewhat 1980s at the same time</strong>.</p>

<p>Hey, why not? <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f604.png" alt="😄" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> I adore both of those time periods and am all for a fun, creative merging of the two.</p>

<p>This card was an experimental one for me and that’s totally okay. Not everything we create is destined to be our personal favourite, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn and grow (our skills) from it. Nor, just as importantly, that our recipient won’t appreciate the end result just as much as if it was our all-time favourite make.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Victorian Inspired Pencil Crayon on Black Cardstock Spring Greetings Card</strong></h3>

<p>On top of the inspiration mentioned above, the stunning <strong>Arabesque Medallion Stamp from Altenew</strong> (a wonderfully kind gift from a fellow paper crafting friend in the States) was a jumping-off point for this card.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-3-683x1024.png" alt="Victorian Inspired Pencil Crayon on Black Cardstock Spring Greetings Card" class="wp-image-2523" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-3-683x1024.png 683w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-3-200x300.png 200w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-3-768x1152.png 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-3-400x600.png 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-3.png 800w" sizes="(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure></div>

<p>The flowers in its design s struck me as being perfect for spring and were all but begging to be coloured with pencil crayon. Who am I to argue? <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f60a.png" alt="😊" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<p>The sentiment stamp that I used here is not part of the Altenew Arabesque set. It is from a run-of-the-mill quality <a href="https://witchcraftedlife.com/the-paper-crafters-complete-guide-to-buying-on-aliexpress/">AliExpress</a> spring-themed stamp set. </p>

<p>Unfortunately, as with many fine/small sentiment stamps (especially inexpensive ones), the size and intricacy of the stamps that I used for the embossed sentiment have a somewhat blurry end result. This is particularly noticeable in the portion of the sentiment that says &#8220;greetings&#8221;.</p>

<p>I’m not wild about that fact, but it looks a touch less pronounced in person, so I can live with it. I just wanted to mention that point here so that you don&#8217;t think my photos themselves are out of focus. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f604.png" alt="😄" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<p>And, in the same vein, I am aware that despite prepping my black cardstock, a little bit of stray silver embossing powder stuck to the cardstock surrounding the Arabesque Medallion Stamp design.</p>

<p>Not much though, luckily, which is great. And honestly, in an appreciated bit of happenstance, it actually seems to help telegraph the look of chalk on a chalkboard all the more. </p>

<p>Also in person, the tulle trim and the colour of the (pencil crayon coloured) leaves in the stamped image are closer in tone than they rendered in these photos.</p>

<p>As I wanted to ensure that the stamped image remained the star of the show on this card, I didn’t embellish it nearly as much as I do many of my other cards.</p>

<p>Instead, I opted for numerous layers of cardstock, three different trims, and a pretty pink pearl flourish.</p>

<p>Even with the colouring, this card was quite quick to make (about three hours from start to finish) and I did sincerely enjoy colouring on black cardstock.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="726" height="1024" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-726x1024.png" alt="Victorian Inspired Pencil Crayon on Black Cardstock Spring Greetings Card" class="wp-image-2520" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-726x1024.png 726w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-213x300.png 213w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-768x1083.png 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-400x564.png 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1.png 851w" sizes="(max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px" /></figure></div>

<p>While not the first time I’ve done so, it’s been a number of years since I last partnered the two and this project helped to remind me of just how enjoyable an act that can be.</p>

<p>(Note: I did not use a colourless blender pencil, gamsol, or any other blending products with my pencil crayon colouring here. I simply laid down and lightly overlapped, in some areas, the colours and left them at that to heighten the chalk colouring look I was aiming for.)</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>How to make a springtime card using coloured pencils on black cardstock</strong></h3>

<p>Begin by making a card base from black cardstock. Cut successively slightly smaller pieces of pinky-purple, black, white, and black (again) cardstock, respectively. Adhere together and then adhere to the card base.</p>

<p>Cut pieces of white, pinky-purple, and light blue cardstock a little smaller than the width of your card base. Round the corners of each of these pieces, then adhere them one on top of each other. Adhere this layer to the back of your card base (aka, the back of the card).</p>

<p>If you wish, you can then cut a larger piece of cardstock or patterned paper of your choosing to cover the back of the card and (somewhat) camouflage where the cardstock is attached.</p>

<p>Alternatively, you could place the rounded corner layers beneath the first cardstock layer on top of your card.</p>

<p>Next, cut a piece of black cardstock slightly larger than the Altenew Arabesque Medallion Stamp.</p>

<p>Prep the black cardstock for embossing by using an embossing bag or similar antistatic tool.</p>

<p>Stamp the Arabesque Medallion Stamp in watermark ink. Top with silver embossing powder and heat emboss.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-5-683x1024.png" alt="Victorian Inspired Pencil Crayon on Black Cardstock Spring Greetings Card" class="wp-image-2525" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-5-683x1024.png 683w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-5-200x300.png 200w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-5-768x1152.png 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-5-400x600.png 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-5.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure></div>

<p>Using a selection of at least two different shades (one lighter, one darker) per colour, select pencil crayons in springtime-y shades of blue, pinky-purple, yellow, and green.</p>

<p>Colour in portions of the stamped and embossed Arabesque Medallion Stamp design as shown in the photos throughout this post, or however you desire.</p>

<p>Once you have completed your colouring, die cut a frame from silver metallic cardstock that leaves most, or all, of your stamped and coloured image visible. Adhere the frame to that piece of black cardstock and then attach the two combined layers to your existing cardstock base layers with foam squares, foam tape, or dimensional pop dots.</p>

<p>Adhere a pink pearl flourish to the lower left-hand side of the card design.</p>

<p>At the top of the card base, adhere a piece of silver metallic cardstock die cut with the same frame die that you used to surround your coloured image (you only need to die cut one of the four sides of the die here) and a strip grey crochet trim.</p>

<p>Towards the bottom of the card base, adhere a piece of grey-blue tulle trim topped with a strip of narrow black velvet ribbon and a piece of the same grey crochet trim.</p>

<p>Using two of the smaller sizes from the nested die set, die cut a piece of black cardstock and a piece of silver cardstock. Adhere together. Position both so that they create a diamond shape, as shown.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="683" height="1024" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-4-683x1024.png" alt="Victorian Inspired Pencil Crayon on Black Cardstock Spring Greetings Card" class="wp-image-2524" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-4-683x1024.png 683w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-4-200x300.png 200w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-4-768x1152.png 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-4-400x600.png 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greetings-Card-4.png 800w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px" /></figure></div>

<p>Prep the black cardstock for embossing, stamp your sentiment using watermark ink, and emboss with silver embossing powder.</p>

<p>Attach your sentiment “diamond” to the lower lefthand corner of your card using dimensional foam or a similar dimensional adhesive.</p>

<p>If you wish, arrange some of the pink pearl flourish so that it overlaps with the sentiment piece.</p>

<p>And there you have it, one eye-catchingly unique springtime card design created using a stamped and coloured image on black cardstock.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Making springtime cards while the sun shines</strong></h3>

<p>Much as the classic expression “make hay while the sun shines” reminds us to seize and utilize the moment, so too does each season encourage us to celebrate it with creative projects of all types.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve felt even more pulled towards creating springtime cards this year than I have in ages. However, as the current season is starting to wind down, I’ll soon be shifting my paper crafting focus to summer and fall makes. </p>

<p>And, honestly, it wouldn’t hurt to get a jump on my winter holiday season projects, too – though I might be getting ahead of myself a tad there! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f604.png" alt="😄" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-726x1024.png" alt="Victorian Inspired Pencil Crayon on Black Cardstock Spring Greetings Card" class="wp-image-2520" width="683" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-726x1024.png 726w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-213x300.png 213w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-768x1083.png 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1-400x564.png 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Victorian-Inspired-Pencil-Crayon-on-Black-Cardstock-Spring-Greeting-Card-1.png 851w" sizes="(max-width: 726px) 100vw, 726px" /></figure></div>

<p>And, while I’m at it, this summer I&#8217;m planning to embrace Emily Carr’s words all the more and dip my toes into the pool of experimentation on a regular basis. </p>

<p>Why not hop in with me? The water is warm and, at the end of the day, <strong>even if an experiment is a total write-off, chances are you learned something and may have developed some of your paper crafting skills further in the process</strong>.</p>

<p>That is a win in my books, regardless of how your project turns out. (Plus – and trust me on this – we are often far harsher critics of our own skills and projects than most others ever would be of our work.) <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f33c.png" alt="🌼" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f5a4.png" alt="🖤" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f33c.png" alt="🌼" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<p>Today is my half-birthday. In other words, exactly six months
until my next birthday rolls around. I adore birthdays, be they my own or other
peoples. </p>

<p>By far one of the best things about birthdays is the cards – and all the more so if they’re handmade! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f60a.png" alt="😊" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_5-768x1024.jpg" alt="Victorian inspired layered die cut shabby elegant handmade card by Autumn Zenith" class="wp-image-624" width="576" height="768" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_5-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_5-225x300.jpg 225w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_5-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_5-1000x1333.jpg 1000w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_5-400x533.jpg 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_5.jpg 1440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></figure></div>

<p>For the <strong>inaugural paper crafting project here on Witchcrafted Life</strong>, I wanted to share a card that I created recently that encapsulates so much about my personal crafting style, favourite colours, and a time period that positively adore.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Cherish, Live, Dream Victorian-inspired shabby elegant card</strong></h3>

<p>This was the first card that I made after the <a href="https://witchcraftedlife.com/welcome-post/">fire</a> happened that I truly loved (yes, for those doing that math, that was more than three years later). </p>

<p>In fact, <strong>it’s one of my favourite cards I’ve ever made</strong> at any point in my life. I’d even go so far as to say it’s in my top five favourite cards to date. </p>

<p>I tend to favour fairly good-sized cards and this one is no exception. <strong>It measures 6 inches/14.2 cm tall x about 6.4 inches/16.2 cm wide</strong>. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Cherish-Live-Dream-goth-shabby-chic-layered-card_8-768x1024.jpg" alt="Victorian inspired layered die cut shabby elegant handmade card by Autumn Zenith" class="wp-image-625" width="576" height="768" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Cherish-Live-Dream-goth-shabby-chic-layered-card_8-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Cherish-Live-Dream-goth-shabby-chic-layered-card_8-225x300.jpg 225w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Cherish-Live-Dream-goth-shabby-chic-layered-card_8-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Cherish-Live-Dream-goth-shabby-chic-layered-card_8-1000x1333.jpg 1000w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Cherish-Live-Dream-goth-shabby-chic-layered-card_8-400x533.jpg 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Cherish-Live-Dream-goth-shabby-chic-layered-card_8.jpg 1440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></figure></div>

<p>As a lifelong fan of the Victorian era (a passion that was inspired in part by my paternal grandma’s own love of that timeframe), I was in the mood to create a card that captured a sense of some of the artistic and aestetic styles of that fascinating segment in time. </p>

<p>While the term shabby chic is open to personal interpretation, I feel that this card stops shy of full-on shabby (though it certainly contains some elements of this style), and instead falls under the header of <strong>shabby elegant</strong>. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Victorian-inspired elements on this card</strong></h3>

<p>The majority of the products used on this card were selected because they channel the opulence and elegance that is often associated with the Victorian era. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_2-778x1024.jpg" alt="Victorian inspired layered die cut shabby elegant handmade card by Autumn Zenith" class="wp-image-628" width="584" height="768" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_2-778x1024.jpg 778w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_2-228x300.jpg 228w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_2-768x1011.jpg 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_2-1166x1536.jpg 1166w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_2-1000x1317.jpg 1000w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_2-400x527.jpg 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_2.jpg 1458w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px" /></figure></div>

<p>This includes the <strong>text print paper</strong>, which called to mind the flowing, beautiful handwriting possessed by many in the 19th century; the ornate metal dies that I used to create many of the layered pieces, and the detailed <strong>white applique trim</strong>.</p>

<p>As well as a faux pearl and rhinestone flat back embellishment, the focal sentiment paper (with its own sophisticated yesteryear inspired border design), the <strong>paper roses</strong>, the dimensional butterfly, and the <strong>colour palette of white, grey, and deep red</strong> (all of which were used in everything from home décor to fashion, including in the case of white and grey, some forms of mourning attire, during the Victorian years). </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Putting this layered card together</strong></h3>

<p>After creating my card base in light grey cardstock, the colour of which reminds me of a mix between chalk dust and chimney smoke on a cool fall evening, I die cut out various detailed border frames. </p>

<p>I then layered these along with a central piece of <strong>Kaisercraft Rose Avenue Collection Silver Notes text print paper</strong> (which was also used for one of the frame layers). </p>

<p>I absolutely adore this gorgeous paper. Unfortunately, I only have one (now partially used) sheet of it and as Kaisercraft is no longer producing this paper, I can’t easily stock up on more. </p>

<p>I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for a similar <strong>cursive script paper</strong> with metallic silver detailing like this beauty. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_4-1-768x1024.jpg" alt="Victorian inspired layered die cut shabby elegant handmade card by Autumn Zenith" class="wp-image-627" width="576" height="768" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_4-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_4-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_4-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_4-1-1000x1333.jpg 1000w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_4-1-400x533.jpg 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_4-1.jpg 1440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></figure></div>

<p>Though it is subtle to the point of almost being imperceivable in these photos, I applied <strong>medium to dark grey ink</strong> lightly to some of the edges of my papers and cardstocks. </p>

<p>As with a lot of the cards (and layouts, tags, etc) that I create, <strong>I love to raise some of my layers up with foam squares</strong> (or tape), pop dots, pieces of craft foam, or other methods that give a project a greater sense of depth and dimension. </p>

<p>I did that here with two of my layers, including the
sentiment panel. </p>

<p>Once the layers were in place, I played around with various trim and embellishment ideas. I knew that I wanted an ornate lace and some flowers, and spent a good while digging through my stash until I hit upon the combo that you see here. </p>

<p>The card was coming together nicely at that point, but I felt that it needed more (story of my paper crafting life, let me tell you! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f603.png" alt="😃" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />).</p>

<p>I added in some <strong>white coloured chunky ball ended floral spray pieces</strong>, the sophisticated <strong>faux pearl</strong> <strong>flatback</strong>, and a single <strong>good-sized butterfly embellishment</strong>. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card-768x1024.jpg" alt="Victorian inspired layered die cut shabby elegant handmade card by Autumn Zenith" class="wp-image-629" width="576" height="768" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card-225x300.jpg 225w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card-1000x1333.jpg 1000w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card-400x533.jpg 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card.jpg 1440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></figure></div>

<p>To tie into the metallic silver in the Kaisercraft script print paper and for added eye-catching charm, I applied some <strong><a href="https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00DUI7F34?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=witchcraftedlife-20">Ranger Stickles in Silver</a></strong> to the edges of the petals on the red paper roses. </p>

<p>And, voilà, my card front was ready to go (when, as in the
case of this make, I create a card that is not yet indented for a specific
person and/or event, I tend to leave the inside very simple or unadorned
entirely until I’m ready to prepare the card for its recipient). </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Card making tips and ideas from this project</strong></h3>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Centre your project around three main colours</strong>, at least one of which is a neutral. In this case, both white and grey are neutrals (as are the small supporting hits of black in elements such as the body of the butterfly and in the text on the sentiment). I prefer if the colours work in harmony, but it is entirely up to you if you want your trio to coordinate. </p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Vary the proportions of each colour that use you</strong>, allowing one or two to dominate and the other(s) to play more of a supporting role. </p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Use a cut-apart from a piece of 12&#215;12</strong> (or another size of) paper, a journaling card, a pocket album/Project Life card, or other pre-printed paper <strong>for your sentiment</strong>. </p>

<p>Stamping, embossing, letter stickers, rub-ons and other options are great as well, but few can compete with the ease and professional-looking text involved with commercially printed papers. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_6-768x1024.jpg" alt="Victorian inspired layered die cut shabby elegant handmade card by Autumn Zenith" class="wp-image-630" width="576" height="768" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_6-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_6-225x300.jpg 225w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_6-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_6-1000x1333.jpg 1000w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_6-400x533.jpg 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_6.jpg 1440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></figure></div>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Jazz up handmade or premade flowers</strong> with things such as Stickles, sparkles, embossing powder, markers (Copics or Spectrum Noir, for example), Liquid Pearls, Nuvo Drops, texture paste, microbeads, small sequins, inks, paint, and other projects that give your faux blooms further eye-catching appeal.</p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Frame your sentiment with embellishment clusters on either side</strong> (generally left and right, or top and bottom, but you could opt for left and bottom as well, for example). </p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Use uneven numbers of products</strong>. It’s a well-known design principle that uneven numbers of elements are often very appealing and visually engaging to the viewer. </p>

<p>Here the three main focal embellishments are the two red roses and the single red and black butterfly. There are enhanced by the two pairs of white floral sprays and the single faux pearl flatback (for a total of five additional embellishments on top of the main three components).</p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Make a dark coloured sentiment pop by matting (framing) it on lighter coloured paper or cardstock</strong> – and vice versa if your sentiment Is light coloured. </p>

<p>Another good option for helping a sentiment cut-apart to stand out is to layer it atop vellum, glitter paper, or metallic cardstock. </p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Balance patterned papers with solid coloured papers or cardstock</strong>. While designs that rely solely on either can be fab, it can sometimes be easier on the eyes to have the “break” that a mix of both offers up. </p>

<p>Here, the dark red paper is subtly printed (in a moulted type of pattern), as is the Kaisercraft text print paper, which I used for two different layers.</p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Don’t be afraid to extend some of your design elements beyond the edges of your card</strong>. I do this ALL THE TIME with my projects. </p>

<p>It adds height and/or width, often makes a card look fancier or more elaborate, and can help to further the sense of a dimension on a given make. </p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>Layer on top of trims and lace</strong>. These types of materials can be awesome on their own, but sometimes they sing all the more when you top them with a little something-something! </p>

<p>I’m partial to pearls, rhinestones, flatback, buttons, wood veneer pieces, charms, die cut shapes, flowers and leaves, enamel dots, sequins, and other (often narrower widths of) trim, lace, twine, and the like. </p>

<p>&#8211;<strong>If you don’t have a die cutting machine</strong> or access to one, <strong>create ornately edged layers</strong> and other design components <strong>with decorative border punches</strong>, decorative edge scissors, pre-made die cut shapes and trims, pinking sheers, or freehand paper tearing for an extra distressed or shabby chic look. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Products to help you recreate this Victorian-inspired layered card</strong></h3>

<p>-White applique lace trim </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_7-768x1024.jpg" alt="Victorian inspired layered die cut shabby elegant handmade card by Autumn Zenith" class="wp-image-631" width="576" height="768" srcset="https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_7-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_7-225x300.jpg 225w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_7-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_7-1000x1333.jpg 1000w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_7-400x533.jpg 400w, https://witchcraftedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Victorian-inspired-die-cut-layered-card_7.jpg 1440w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></figure></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What occasion would this card be well suited for?</strong></h3>

<p>Given the lovely sentiment that this layered grey and red card features, you could give it to someone for a multitude of different occasions. Naturally, if you’re making a similar looking card, yourself, chances are you&#8217;ll be using an alternative sentiment.</p>

<p>Between the serene, almost somber colours and the touching sentiment, I feel <strong>this card would be well suited to everything from offering support and encouragement to a retirement, anniversaries to birthdays</strong>.</p>

<p>If the sentiment was changed (or perhaps even as it stands now, depending on the recipient) <strong>this card could also be a good fit for times of sympathy and loss</strong>, thanks to its colour palette, flowers and butterfly (the latter a symbol of hope and comfort). </p>

<p>I really do adore this card and the spirit of the Victorian
era that it captures and can easily see myself “scraplifting” this general
design again (and again!) for future card projects as well. </p>

<p>Are you inspired by certain historical eras or style with your paper crafting makes as well? </p>

<p>What sort of occasion do you see this card working especially well for?</p>

<p></p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Quick notes about my paper crafting posts in general</strong></h3>

<p>As a side note to this project itself, I wanted to mention
the following points as today’s post is my first project share on this blog.</p>

<p>-We live in a small house with some, but not a ton, of natural light and, honestly, not that much artificial lighting either. I’m shooting with an iPhone 7 and it’s currently wintertime, so I’m definitely experimenting with available lighting (just as I am with how I style and photograph my completed paper crafting makes). </p>

<p>As such, things may vary a bit on this front, especially throughout my initial project share posts, until I hit on a lighting + backdrop (and/or styling) combo that I’m currently happy with. </p>

<p>-I readily welcome you to share, <strong><a href="https://pinterest.com/witchcraftedlife">pin</a></strong>, and repost my photos, I simply ask that you <strong>please credit them to me, Autumn Zenith at WitchcraftedLife.com</strong></p>

<p>-Unless clearly stated, none of the materials used or products featured on my blog are sponsored, endorsed, or received gratis from companies, websites or physical stores.</p>

<p></p>
