Presently, we have the joy of being so to our sweet dog, Annie. (Who you may recall from my scrapbook page project share Only Love Let’s Us See or from my various Instagram posts about her over the years.)

After a string of places that either did not allow pets at all or permitted cats, but not dogs, we were elated when the home we moved to in February 2012 (the house that would, tragically, be lost about 4.5 years later in the devastating arson fire that we experienced) was dog friendly.

Both lifelong dog lovers, Tony and I were eager to add a canine companion to our lives and began keeping an eye out for a precious pup that would fit the bill.

Jump ahead to March of the following year. Tony spied a listing from someone a few hours south of us selling puppies that really resonated with him. Or, I should say, with both of us.

Though the timing wasn’t the best (I was mere weeks away from a fairly substantial surgery and its ensuing post-op recovery), we had a feeling that we’d found our dog, so decided to take a leap of faith, drive down to the city where she was located, and see this cuter-than-cute pup in person.

She was the last of her litter – all of which were incredibly cute – by the time we arrived.

Aside from clearly being harassed a bit by an adult chihuahua that lived in the same house, she was in fine spirits, looked (and was) wonderfully healthy, and melted our hearts faster than one could say “we’ll take her”.

Driving back home that very same day, our sweet pup snuggled in my arms throughout the ever-darkening night as Tony and I conversed for a good while on what to name our new bundle of furry joy.

Many possibilities were raised, stemming from ones based on her colours (black and white) to the city that she hailed from (Delta).

Ultimately though, it was the date itself that steered our final choice.

Tony and I celebrate both our wedding anniversary (in October) and the anniversary of the day that we first met back in 2004.

To differentiate between the two, we affectionately refer to the day we met as our “loveiversary”.

As we picked up Annie on the day before our loveiversary and had already decided that she would be our gift to each other that year for our special day, I proposed the name “Annie” – as in “anniversary”.

We both felt the name click and settled on it immediately.

Officially, her full first name is Annabelle (a subtle Poe reference, albeit with different spelling, that I adore) and we do call her that sometimes, but more often than not, she’s Annie.

Or Miss Annie. Or Puppers. Or Snoop (because her colouring reminds us of the classic Peanuts character, Snoopy). Or any one of a zillion other nicknames she’s had (and continues to have) over the years.

Annie was the first dog that either of us had owned as adults and it is safe to say that her early years were an eye-opening learning experience for all involved.

She was a major chewer for the first 1 – 2 years of her life, which wasn’t the easier thing ever to handle, but thankfully, between our training and her simply maturing in due course, Annie outgrew those tendencies (save for things like plush toys and throw pillows, which we still have to keep an eye on her around).

It was immediately obvious to us that Annie was as smart as a whip. She learned most of the commands we taught her very quickly, soon settled into the routine of our daily life, and knocked our socks off from the get-go both with her energy levels and her incredibly sweet, caring heart.

These days, our beloved Miss Annie is likely heading towards – to borrow a term from my Pagan path – her crone years.

As I type these words, she is just shy of 9.5 years old. Thankfully and joyfully, she still has the energy and stamina of a dog several years her junior and shows little sign of slowing down anytime soon.

While not a hard and fast tradition, some years, when possible, Tony and I love to give Mother’ Day and Father’s Day cards and/or gifts to give to each other as a way of thanking one another for the great job (humbly) that we both do of taking care of Annie.

The card featured in this post is the one that Tony will be receiving today. It is a shabby chic design rendered in a masculine colour palette of blues, browns, white, and muted gold.

But before we delve further into the specifics of this charmingly fun handmade Father’s Day’s card, allow me to share more about Annie with all of you.

Ten fast facts about our dog, Annie

1. While many people confuse her, understandably, with being a Border Collie due to her size and colouring, she is in fact half Labrador Retriever and half American Bulldog. This mix is, adorably, called a “Bullador”.

2. She is a very high-energy animal and, like many of her canine peers, delights in playing fetch, going for long walks, hiking, and playing at the dog park.

Speaking of which, as a true extrovert of an animal if there was one, Annie usually has zero trouble getting along swimmingly with other dogs and often assumes the role of (temporary) pack leader, if one is not already firmly established in a given setting.

3. Her BFF is our neighbour’s Shepherd mix, Nova, who they rescued as a puppy in 2019. Nova really looks up to Annie and clearly worships the ground she walks on (which is the cutest thing to witness). The two have been inseparable mix since the first time they met and enjoy multiple playdates in our backyard every month.

4. As is relatively common amongst dogs, especially medium and large-sized breeds (Annie’s height and weight classify her as being a medium-large dog), unfortunately, Annie developed cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) issues in both of her back legs that required major surgeries to help repair.

The first leg was impacted in the winter of 2017 – 2018 and surgery was swiftly performed. The second back leg showed the same telltale signs in the winter of 2018 – 2019 and again, the same surgery was rapidly undertaken.

Both procedures required extensive recovery periods during which her activity levels had to be severely restricted so that the injured limb could heal.

Thankfully, in both cases, with a few months of taking things super easy and providing at-home physiotherapy to her, Annie made a full recovery. You’d never know to see her these days that she has the canine equivalent of two hip or knee replacements.

5. Annie is very sensitive to other peoples’ moods, states of mind, and physical well-being, and will immediately spot if someone is down or feeling unwell. At which point, she all but velcros herself to them and does her best to lift their spirits.

6. She has an incredibly powerful bite. So much so that, while not intending to destroy them in seven seconds flat, Annie does inadvertently wreck most types of toys that she’s received over the years (even those from numerous brands that bill themselves as being nearly indestructible). Exceptions to this include some Kong and Chuckit products.

7. While experts say that highly intelligent dogs can learn up to 250 words, we are genuinely convinced that Annie may understand somewhere in the range of 300 – 500+ English words.

If this is true, we credit it in part to her extremely high IQ and also to the fact that both Tony and I have worked primarily from home her whole life, so she’s been around us (and other sources of audible language, such as music, video calls, and Netflix) for a huge percentage of her waking hours.

8. Annie is an excellent guard dog who alerts us the second anything that she deems a potential threat (local deer and ravens included ) comes to her attention.

9. By the same token though, unless it was to protect one of us against a serious threat or to defend herself in a true dog fight, Annie wouldn’t harm a fly. She gets on awesomely with other dogs, cats, and humans of all ages (and she adores kids to no end; happily, most of the ones she encounters love her back in return).

10. Annie’s favourite foods are salmon, peanut butter, eggs, any type of beef, cucumber, and watermelon (seedless, of course, for safety’s sake). Plus, naturally, bones, bones and more bones.

She eats a diet comprised of high-quality store-bought and homemade meals in which we try to include plenty of her favourites throughout the year.

(Interestingly, while she’ll gleefully eat them, Annie doesn’t do well gastrointestinally speaking with chicken and turkey. Of the two, she handles turkey better, but knowing this, we severely restrict her consumption of either.)

And now, a fun fact about me…

I absolutely adore puns and other clever forms of wordplay. It is borderline ridiculous how much I enjoy these things and like many a paper crafter, I delight in weaving puns and wordplay of various types into some of my handmade projects.

(If puns are your cup of tea as well, I highly recommend the excellent book, The Pun Also Rises by John Pollak.)

I did not invent the term “Pawser’s Day”, but as I had not yet created a project featuring it, doing so for Tony’s ninth’s Father’s Day as a “puprent” felt like a spot of wordplay that was long overdue.

Creating cards for my sweet hubby is all the more pleasurable because he enjoys a wide range of styles, colours, themes and so forth.

This gives me a great deal of much appreciated creative freedom and means that the elements that comprise my signature paper crafting style are still able to come out and play when I make a project for Tony.

Naturally, though I stay mindful of what colours and other elements are apt to tickle his fancy in particular and like to weave our mutual tastes together in the crafts I whip up for him.

The colours for this Happy Pawser’s Day card were inspired by the returning summer weather and the earth beneath our feet at dog parks, nature trails, and our own backyard alike.

The blue and white represent the sky and clouds, the shades of brown are dirt (something most dog owners are intimately acquainted with ), and the muted gold symbolizes the glowing sunshine of June.

A fun doggo print paper enters the fold as well. It sports a similar colour palette and does not distract from the other elements at play here.

In an ode to Annie’s unceasing passion for bones, a quartet of them appear in the form of die cut shapes that I painted with Tim Holtz Picket Fence Crackle Paint.

Pre-fire, I owned most of Tim’s paints, these days, I just have a couple so far. Thankfully, it is hard to find a more versatile colour of paint than white, so it’s easy to alter Picket Fence’s hue, if needed, once it is dry.

You can do so with various mediums including inks, alcohol markers, dye markers, Wink of Stella markers, watercolour paints, and glitter glues such as Stickles and Nuvo Glitter Drops.

Keep in mind though, that the thicker and/or darker the medium you top white crackle paint with, the less the crackle effect may show through.

I left the paint in its natural state here, as white was my intended colour for the cute little die cut dog bones.

Adding cardboard is a great way to up the masculine look of a project, so I included a distressed piece of it as a lovely, rugged counterpoint to the abundance of teal glitter cardstock.

While I don’t have a cutting die that is a dead ringer for Annie, I had a fun trio of dog silhouette dies in my stash and used all three at the top of this Father’s Day card.

The center dog, while perhaps somewhat more Golden Retriever looking, does resemble Annie a bit and the wee pup on the righthand side definitely reminds me of Annie when she was a youngster.

As I didn’t have a die or stamp with the word “Pawser’s Day”, I turned to a tried-and-true trick of mine for occasions when I don’t have a premade product featuring a specific word or sentiment and simply spelled out what I wanted to say with mini letter stickers.

To create the tiny comma between the “r” and the “s” in Pawser’s Day, I simply hand drew one myself using a white gel pen.

This card was oodles of fun to make. I really hope that Tony gives it two big thumbs up. Just as I like to think it would get two approving paws up from Annie, if she could weigh in with her vote.

-Pawprint and bone rectangle frame die (I purchased this die on AliExpress a few years ago. A fairly similar-looking bone and pawprint frame die is currently available at the time of writing on eBay. As well, Whimsy Stamps sells an awesome Paws and Bones Border Die Set that I would absolutely love to add to my stash one day. You could use the dies in this set to create your own rectangle shaped frame.)

-Elegant frame die with curved corners (or another frame die of your choice)

-Scripty font “happy” word die (or use single letter dies or stickers to create this word instead)

-Adhesive, such as a tape runner, of your choice (I often use my Scotch Tape Glider)

How to make a masculine shabby chic Father’s Day card

Begin by making a card base from white cardstock.

Cut a piece of the dog print paper slightly narrower, but at least ½ an inch taller, than your card base. Ink edges of this piece with grey ink and adhere to card base.

Cut two thin strips of brown wooden floorboard print paper, two thin strips of teal glitter paper, and one piece of blue/teal floral print paper. Ink edges of floral print paper using teal ink.

Arrange and adhere the floral print paper in the center of the card. Adhere the teal glitter strips, then the brown wooden board print strips, on the top and bottom edges of the floral print paper.

Using the dark brown cardstock, die cut a curved corner frame die and adhere it to the previous layers.

Cut and lightly distress a piece of brown/kraft cardboard. Adhere to previous layers.

Top the cardboard with a piece of dark brown cardstock (lightly distress edges, if desired), a slightly smaller piece of dog print paper (ink edges with grey ink), a frame cut from teal glitter cardstock and the same elegant frame die used above, a piece of wooden floorboard print paper, a frame cut from the pawprint and dog bone frame, and a piece of white cardstock (to back the opening of the pawprint frame with).

Arrange and adhere these layers as shown in the photos.

Die cut the word “happy” from teal glitter cardstock and adhere to the white center portion of the pawprint frame.

Use brownish rose gold coloured mini alphabet letter stickers to spell out the words “Pawser’s Day”. Then use a white gel pen to create the comma on the letter “s”. Adhere below the word “happy”.

Die cut one set of dog silhouette shapes from brown wooden floorboard print paper and another from teal glitter cardstock.

Adhere the teal glitter shapes slightly offset to the brown floorboard shapes. Arrange and adhere at the top of the card, as shown.

Create a bow from flax/muted gold coloured seam binding (pre-scrunching/crumpling and drying seam binding beforehand, if you wish).

Lastly, die cut four small bone shaped pieces from white cardstock (or thin chipboard) and apply a medium-thick layer of Picket Fence Distress Crackle Paint.

Allow paint to fully die, then adhere bones around the corners of the pawprint frame.

And there you have it, a delightful Father’s Day card that celebrates one’s passion for pups, marries cute with sophisticated, masculine with shabby chic, and which is sure to find favour with any pet parent or lover that you bestow it upon.

Fatherhood comes in many forms

Much as with motherhood, fatherhood is not a one size fits all situation.

While, in a human context, we tend to think of words like “dad”, “papa”, and “father” in the context of being a parent or guardian to fellow people, this word can also be extended to those who are pet parents.

I know that this makes some folks cringe, but personally, I don’t have an issue with it.

From day one with both Annie and our (late) cat, Stella, Tony and I have referred to one another as “mommy” and “daddy” in the context of raising and taking care of our pets.

In fact, as Tony and I rarely address one another by our first names (preferring nicknames or terms of endearment such as “sweetie” or “honey”) but will often say “daddy” or “mommy” when referring to each other around Annie, I’d bet you a jar of Annie’s favourite all-natural peanut butter that she thinks those are our names.

Tony is an excellent pet parent. Care, love, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to our animals are just some of the many positive traits that help to make him one.

He adores Annie with every fibre of his being (as I do) and relishes the responsibility and honour of getting to provide her with the best life we possibly can.

At nearly 9.5 years old, we know that Annie almost certainly has fewer years ahead of her than those she has already experienced.

We accept this heartbreaking fact and try not to dwell on it too much. There’s little sense in letting the natural course of life rob of us the joy of experiencing the present moments that we are blessed to have with Annie.

Right here and now, she is healthy, spry, energetic, (super) playful, and doing great overall. Be it on Father’s Day or any other day of the year, this is an invaluable gift.

As is having a partner in life who cares about and loves animals every bit as much as do (which is why I wanted to celebrate this fact via Tony’s Father’s Day card this year).

Not all of us are dads, of course. Nor do we all have relationships, for whatever reason(s), with our fathers.

This day can be challenging for some people. More than I could ever adequately put into words, believe me, I get and relate to this myself.

I sincerely hope though that it is possible for you to still enjoy Father’s Day or at least not find it unbearable. Think of those dads you’ve known throughout your life (be they family members or otherwise) who excelled in this role.

Reflect on favourite fictional or celebrity fathers, the way (if applicable) your partner is a great papa to your kid(s), and all the fantastic pet parents you may know.

Beyond that, there is the universal element of the divine masculine, male deities pertaining to fatherhood, and the fact that not a single human being would have come into being were it not for the combination of (biological) male and female DNA.

To all those celebrating, honouring, or remembering dads and father figures or archetypes today in any capacity (pet parenthood very much included), I hope that you have a terrific time doing so and that all the papas in your life enjoy a very happy Father’s Day.

A wish that, I have no doubt, Annie seconds all the way.

Amongst the most common of which is a return to seeing and hearing a greater number of bird species.

This is both a harbinger of the current season as it approaches, as well as further proof that spring is here again once.

While our house is technically in a residential neighbourhood, it is situated between two parcels of beautiful woodland and our own (literal) backyard is jam-packed with lofty birch and evergreen trees.

For a forest adoring soul like myself, this really is a dream backyard and not a day goes by that I don’t thank my lucky stars for it.

If their numbers are any evidence, the local birds that flock to the trees on our property clearly adore this spot of woodland as well.

In the four (and a tad) years that we have lived at this house so far, we’ve spotted and heard a wide array of birds.

These include, but are not limited to, ravens, owls, hawks, northern flickers, pheasants, Eurasian collared doves, mourning doves, blackbirds, Steller’s jays, finches, sparrows, magpies, robins, chickadees, nuthatches, sparrows, woodpeckers, quail, and even the occasional hummingbird.

Beyond those winged visitors who come to call in our yard, both our town and region are home to many other species – as are British Columbia and Canada in general.

In fact, the Canadian Wildlife Federation informs us that there are approximately 462 known bird species living across this vast country.

And according to a CTV News article published last year, globally that number rises to a staggering 600,000+ species of birds.

It is no surprise then that birds have played important roles in the lives of a tremendous number of cultures around the world since time immemorial.

Whether revered and worshiped, used for food, feathers or other body parts; captured in art, written or sung about, or simply appreciated for their talents and beauty, birds have impacted the lives of countless people across the span of history.

The spiritual significance that birds have long held for many individuals cannot be overstated.

In some instances, gods and goddesses were believed to exist in bird or bird-human hybrid form (i.e., the falcon-headed Egyptian god named Horus), in others birds or images, figures, etc depicting them have been used both ritualistically and magically.

Many religions that could be dubbed modern “mainstream” faiths due to their widespread prevalence and large number of followers, as well as those of a more ancestorial and/or esoteric nature have made birds a part of their traditions and stories.

For both myself and a fair number of other Pagans, witches, and Wiccans, birds play important roles in our beliefs, practices, and, where applicable, magickal workings.

I have connected spiritually to birds my whole life and have spoken with numerous fellow witchy/Pagan souls who shared that the same applies to them as well.

While birds are not everyone’s favourite animal and ornithophobia (the fear of birds) is a relatively common fear, it is likely safe to say that far more people – regardless of their personal faith/beliefs – like birds than loath or fear them.

Birds enchant and delight us. They hold traditional meanings and can be seen as messengers that are here to transmit something important to us.

Their ability (barring a few species) to take flight and soar through the air, reaching high up in the sky has likely fascinated and inspired us since humans first appeared on this planet. And it is no surprise that an animal who ascends towards the heavens would have deep spiritual meaning for many individuals.

Birds do what a lot of us wish we (easily) could: leave the bounds of terra firma and sore above the earth, experiencing both the freedoms and challenges that come from such a lofty vantage point.

While I have always liked birdwatching and keep my eyes peeled for birds that may appear to me as messengers, signs, and spiritual allies, I am not a hardcore hobbyist bird watcher – nor have I ever worked with birds in a professional capacity.

Naturally, one does not have to be a serious birder to look out for and work with birds in whatever ways align with your interests and beliefs.

Though the last vestiges of winter have yet to vanish entirely from our tree-studded yard, spring officially started a couple of weeks now and that means many an avian visitor and seasonal resident alike is returning to our area once again.

I know that the same rings true for plenty of my readers as well. As such, I thought it was high time I reviewed a relatively recently released book pertaining to the spiritual meanings of birds: The Hidden Meaning of Birds: A Spiritual Field Guide by Arin Murphy-Hiscock.

An elegant volume on the subject of birds and meanings, this title was penned by one of today’s best-selling and well-known Pagan authors. The Hidden Meaning of Birds does a great job of melding scientific fact with folklore and spiritual traditions, and serves as a lovely read for those at all levels of knowledge on the subject of birds and their spiritual connections.

A book on the spiritual meaning of birds that is worth chirping about

There are exceedingly few corners of the globe in which one cannot find at least a species or two of birds. They reside in both the Arctic and Antarctic, in the densest jungles, are spotted in the driest of deserts, and can be seen many miles away from shore across the world’s oceans and seas.

Given the astronomical number of birds that exist on earth, it would be impossible for any one book to cover the ascribed spiritual meanings of every variety of bird. Not to mention the plethora of different interpretations and correspondences that many different birds have long been connected with across the planet.

Naturally, The Hidden Meaning of Birds: A Spiritual Field Guide by Arin Murphy-Hiscock does not attempt to do so – nor should it.

That would be an impossible task, as well as an unnecessary one.

Birds are just about everywhere and whether we’re dealing with those in our own neighbourhoods, the species that resonate most deeply with us spiritually, or simply have a love for certain types of birds, it never hurts to leave room for our own interpretations of things.

Penned by best-selling Pagan author – and fellow Canadian – Arin-Murphy Hiscock (whose work include such beloved contemporary titles as The Green Witch’s Grimoire, The House Witch, Spellcrafting, The Witch’s Guide to Self-Care, and The Pregnant Goddess, amongst numerous other titles), The Hidden Meaning of Birds is an appealing look at the spiritual connections and meanings linked to a few dozen species of birds.

Each bird entry that appears in this book is accompanied by a beautiful vintage bird illustration, an overview of the species, symbolism and folklore, and the meanings, omens and divinations associated with that particular type of bird.

Entries in this spiritual field guide to birds span 2 – 4 pages per bird and at the end of each entry, one finds a box in which the associated energies, associated seasons, elemental associations, and colour associations are provided for the bird in question (see image above).

These correspondences are especially handy for those who may wish to work with bird images, energy, feathers, etc in their spiritual and/or magical practices.

Before hopping (or would that be flying?) into the heart of the guide itself, readers are treated to an introduction and three chapters pertaining to the mysteries of birds. These are Historical Bird Divination, Modern Bird Divination, and Working with Birds Spiritually.

Each of these sections does a good job of concisely and informatively providing an overview of the topic at hand.

There is a tone of the serious and the academic to this book that aligns it with many mainstream bird identification and birdwatching guides – a point that is cemented all the more by the use of yesteryear avian illustrations in lieu of photos or modern artwork.

However, the tone is not so dry or encyclopedic as to lose sight of the spiritual elements that are, along with the bird species themselves, at the heart of this title.

Bound in a sturdy, field guide style softcover, this 240 page book is an engaging, informative read that is apt to have even the most seasoned birdwatchers amongst us looking at the feathered residents in their area (and around the world) with deeper interest than ever before.

How The Hidden Meaning of Birds: A Spiritual Field Guide rates with me

As with many of the books I review here on Witchcrafted Life, it is not strictly imperative that one be a witch/Wiccan/Pagan/similar to read, learn from, and enjoy The Hidden Meaning of Birds.

While certainly geared towards the spiritual side of humankind’s connection to birds, those with a general interest in ornithological topics (including both the history and folklore of various bird species) as well as individuals who simply wish to learn more about birds are apt to connect with this book as well.

I appreciate that the species highlighted The Hidden Meaning of Birds are arranged alphabetically and while there are numerous bird species I would have been delighted to see included here that didn’t make the cut, as touched on above, naturally, no single book could ever cover all of the bird species in the world.

What the reader finds instead is a cross-section of bird species from around the globe – think crows, mockingbirds, cardinals, swans, owls, and pigeons to name but six of many featured in this guide.

If you are the type who often sees and/or hears birds and feels a spiritual connection to them or believes that there are deeper meanings to be had when a particular type of bird crosses your path, chances are, you will enjoy this book.

It is by no means the first or only one on the subject of the spiritual meaning of birds, but having been published in 2019, it is amongst the most recent.

The Hidden Meaning of Birds is also one of the most informative that I have personally read to date. And since picking this title up shortly after its release, I have dipped into it many times beyond my initial reading.

Indeed, like many a good field guide, this is the type of book that one is likely to read cover-to-cover at least once or twice and then return to when information on a particular bird species is needed.

At times, I do wish that a larger volume of meaning was connected to certain birds featured in Murphy-Hiscock’s guide to our avian friends.

As well, it would have been great if the author had linked each bird species she covered to one or more of the sabbats that comprise The Wheel of The Year. Though, to be fair, as she does connect each species to one or more seasons, that information appears in a roundabout way all the same.

As someone who madly adores vintage and antique illustrations, I found the choice to use them here instead of modern artwork or photos added to the charm and interest of this book.

Some readers, however, may have preferred contemporary art or photos – especially if they were trying to identify a particular species of bird that crossed their path.

Thankfully though, on top of traditional birding guides, the internet is rife with sites and apps to help you do just that, if you are not able to find a given bird amongst the dozens included in this book.

Birds are a vital part of life as we know it here on earth.

For some of us, birds serve as spirit allies and guides (aka, “spirit animals”, though I try to refrain from using this term in most contexts, as it belongs to certain traditional cultures and belief systems), appearing to us with messages and meanings both of the type that may jive with those in books and others that might be highly personal to our own lives + spiritual paths.

The Hidden Meaning of Birds is not the absolute last word on the subject of spirituality and birds. No book or blog post could ever be.

Birds, like the air they traverse, are malleable and astonishing.

Humankind has long connected certain meanings, correspondences, superstitions, traditions, and lore to various birds.

These elements possess a degree of broad universality. However, it is ultimately up to each of us to interpret what our connections to, and encounters with, various types of birds mean in the context of our own lives and belief systems.

Having The Hidden Meaning of Birds to hand makes that job all the easier and more enjoyable, and as such it is a title that I am happy to recommend.

Or, if you prefer, just say to people that a little birdie told you about this book.

Working on a scale of 1 – 5, with five being the highest possible rating, I would give The Hidden Meaning of Birds by Arin Murphy-Hiscock 4 stars out of 5.

Since launching this quarterly blog post series in 2020, I have often begun my “Magick, Crafty Makes, and Me” entries with a quote pertaining to the forthcoming season.

There is no shortage of excellent quotes to be had about this revitalizing time of the year. However, while we are technically two short days away from the start of springtime, a different season, so to speak, has fallen upon the earth once again: that of profoundly devastating war.

I know and am the first to acknowledge that, heartbreakingly, there have been wars in one part of the world or another pretty much continually since time immemorial. The preceding (and present) years of the 21^st century fully included.

No serious conflict is without suffering, loss, injustice, hardship, sacrifice, and long-lasting devastation. Yet few wars since the final days of WW2 have, mercifully, brought with them the imminent possibility of another large-scale global war.

That is until the world’s biggest country (geographically speaking) decided to wage battle against a peaceful neighbouring nation for absolutely no good – or moreover, even remotely justifiable – reason.

Generally speaking, I go out of my way to avoid the news (especially as an HSP and an empath), knowing that if something is big or important enough, I will surely find out about it one way or another.

However, like a great deal of us, I have been glued to news reports regarding the horrific conflict in Ukraine.

Tears fall from my eyes like shrapnel of the soul. They are shed in unison with the millions that tumble from the exhausted, frightened, and utterly perplexed eyes of countless Ukrainians. To say nothing of the rest of the world, too.

As with most tragedies, there is a powerful sense of the surreal to what is happening in Eastern Europe right now.

Surely, we will all wake up tomorrow or the next day or the day after that and realize that the past three (going on four) weeks have been a hellacious nightmare.

Yet, as is so often the case, the very worst nightmares stem not from our sleeping minds, but from the atrocities that are carried out by certain individuals, groups, or nations when we are acutely awake.

I need only climb a few short branches back in time on my family tree to quickly come face-to-face with ancestors who hailed both from Russia and what is present-day Ukraine + Moldova. Some of whom immigrated to Canada as recently as the 1930s.

I knew and loved a few of these people firsthand before their respective passings during the early years of my childhood.

They were not far-off relations from centuries-long past. They were amongst my grandparents, great-grandparents, and great aunts + uncles. They embraced their new homeland with gusto but never lost sight of the culture, traditions, and memories they had grown up experiencing on the other side of the world.

As is the case for most people, it should go without saying that I am 100% on the side of Ukraine (and that of the Russian citizens who are strongly opposed to this incredibly brutal conflict).

It would be unconscionable in my books not to be.

This is not the first time in their nation’s long and fascinating history that Ukraine has come under siege or been unfathomably brutalized in other ways. For example, (WARNING: the following link includes graphic subject matter and images that may be difficult/disturbing for some viewers – especially younger ones) the Holodomor that occurred under the tyrannical reign of Joseph Stalin.

I have no doubt that many people in Ukraine knew prior to this war’s onset that they were strong, proud, capable individuals.

However, both inside and all the more so outside of the country itself, it is safe to say that few could have imagined just how incredibly strong and resilient 21st-century Ukrainians would prove to be.

The quote that begins this post stems from one of America’s founding fathers, William Samuel Johnson. It is no less true today than it was in the 18^th century. If anything, it may in fact hold even more weight nowadays.

Of course, though this colonial-era quote houses male pronouns, it is safe to say that Ukrainians of all genders are showing amazing fortitude and bravery in the face of their nation literally being razed to the ground.

So long as nuclear and biological weapons are not introduced into the fold, I continue to believe that Ukraine has a very real chance of winning this sham of a war.

Not a sham in the sense of it being make-believe (sadly, nothing could be further from the truth), but rather a sham because of its senseless and unprovoked nature.

As many of us keep a watchful eye on news updates viewed on TV, cell phone, tablet, and computer screens, the ravages of war growing ever more horrendous with each passing minute, it can be hard to shift our focus to lighter matters.

For not the first time in my life, tragedy drives home an intensely strong sense of what, at the end of the day, really matters and what can at times seem rather trivial and/or happy-go-lucky by comparison.

Just as it is doing for countless other souls across the globe right now as well.

We go on though, our hearts heavy with emotions such as grief, anger, and fear. We keep trying to live the lives that we are immeasurably blessed to have to the best of our abilities.

Ukraine is never far from our minds – nor is the looming threat of global war – as we do so. We have been starkly reminded of how, objectively, any of our own countries could theoretically find itself in the same sort of situation.

Thousands of miles away from Eastern Europe, snow still dots the landscape around our corner of British Columbia.

Springtime has phoned and made reservations, but it has not checked into its suite just yet.

It is coming through. The ever-earlier arrival of sunlight each morning, the orchestra of bird songs that have begun to fill the air once again, and the first brave crocuses that proudly stretch their necks above the frozen ground all assure us that spring will be here before we know it.

With just two days to go until the official start of spring in the Western Hemisphere, it is time for a fresh new edition of this reoccurring post series.

As usual, the Winter 2022 Edition of Magick, Crafty Makes, and Me is a link love post featuring online content that caught my eye during the past three months, coupled with a peek into what has been transpiring lately in my own life.

It can be – especially in this day and age of social media – challenging to start out as a new witch. It seems like there is so much to know and do and learn. Getting overwhelming or feeling like you must keep up with the witchy Joneses (many of whom have been practicing for ten, twenty-five, forty – you name it – years at this point) can easily happen.

Go easy on yourself, dear witchling, and find both advice and encouragement from this lovely post that guides new witches through some very useful approaches to beginning your beautiful journey into witchhood.

–Cute Witch Art Projects for Kids: Save for our six-year-old nephew (who lives in Italy), there are currently no young kids in our immediate family. If there were (and they lived nearby), I would love to spend a fun-filled afternoon with them making the simple, budget-friendly witch-related art projects that are featured in this charming post from Moody Moons.

–50 Signs that You’re an Old Soul: In my experience, many old souls inherently know that they are precisely that. However, sometimes a person may not be aware of their beautifully aged soul or, if they are, they might like to learn more about the subject. Finding, in the process, shared traits and experiences with plenty of their fellow old souls.

–How to Make a Lovely Herb Drying Rack: Now, granted, this link could have gone in the more generic crafty column above. However, given how many witchy/Pagan folks are deeply interested in herbology, I figured that this link would be at squarely home in this section, too.

While most herbs (especially those grown outdoors) have not rebloomed again yet this year, in due course they will. If you have been itching to find an effective way to dry more of them yourself, this lovely tutorial on how to make a hanging herb drying rack has your back all the way.

–Make a Tiered Herb Planter with Dollar Store Buckets: And carrying on with the herb growing theme – because, if you can’t go all out on gardening-related topics in the spring, when can you? – this fantastic and very wallet-friendly approach to making a tiered herb planter with inexpensive buckets from the dollar store is a great approach for those on a budget or anyone looking to save some green (see what I did there? ) on the herb growing front.

–7 Reasons Why Self-Love is Spiritually Empowering: These days, most of us are familiar with the concepts of self-care and self-love. Ideally, we try our best to successfully make time in our busy lives to focus on these important areas. In doing so, however, have you ever stopped to think about the connections that can (and often do) exist between self-love and your spirituality?

This great post from Reroot Your Life explores that very subject and offers up seven excellent reasons why self-love is spiritually empowering.

–The Ethics of Divining World Events: It is human nature to look for answers, insight and (ideally) comfort when times get not only tough, but downright brutal.

For those who engage in various forms of divination, it can likewise come naturally to us to seek (possible!!!) answers with the cards, runes, or most other methods of divining.

This thought-provoking post from esteemed witchery/Paganism blogger + author John Beckett (I cannot recommend his book The Path of Paganism highly enough) delves into the pros and cons, ethically speaking, of doing just for major world events.

No matter which side of the fence you fall on when it comes to this subject, John’s fairhanded article is well worth reading during these tremendously uncertain times.

–A Simple Lavender Wreath to Celebrate Spring: While “simple” in terms of the number of products required and ease of creation, rest assured that this elegant spring wreath is a head-turningly beautiful way to add extra seasonal pizzazz to any door (or wall) in your home.

–Cuddly Pompom Easter Bunny Tutorial: If you are in the mood for a melt-your-heart adorable springtime craft that is both easy and fabulously festive (not to mention a great gift idea), allow me to suggest this delightful pompom Easter (or Ostara) Bunny tutorial.

–Four Ways to Organize Your Sticker Addiction: This post is a few years old, but I just hit upon it this winter and felt that it would be right at home in the next edition of this link love series.

What’s Shaking in My Life and On My Radar

This winter passed, as they pretty much always do around these parts, in a flurry of snowflakes, bone-chilling temps, parkas, and warm woollen mittens.

Three cold snaps punctuated the already frozen air, though none saw the mercury drop below -30C/-22F.

Believe me when I say that by Canadian standards, that really isn’t too bad.

As I mentioned here a few blog posts ago, my sister contracted Covid this winter. Thankfully, she did not become extremely ill and/or require hospitalization. While she is still in the process of healing and regaining energy, I am grateful beyond measure to report that she is doing a fair bit better these days.

None of our other loved ones came down with Covid this winter (nor did Tony or I), which we are also endlessly thankful about. One can only speculate as to if that same statement can be made in another three months – let alone at the end of the year.

Also a few weeks ago, Tony and I received our booster shots (aka, our third vaccinations) and will continue to be the first in line for any future Covid vaccines that may be offered to the Canadian public.

Even though I personally think it is too soon to do so, earlier this week the BC provincial government rescinded the law mandating that masks be worn in most types of businesses and other enclosed public spaces.

I am starkly aware of the fact that a huge percentage of the population will, if not toss their masks away outright, then at least banish them to the back of the closet.

It is very easy to understand why and just as I have maintained since the get-go with the pandemic, to each their own when it comes to navigating the challenging waters of the Coronavirus.

Personally, however, as someone who is immune-compromised, I will continue to sport a mask to all the same types of places I have been doing so for the past couple of years. Far better to be safe than sorry.

With so much uncertainty in the world right now – and with the pandemic still going strong – we have not made much in the way of plans yet for the coming spring and summer months.

And after the especially brutal wildfire season that ravaged BC last year (it stands as one of the all-time worst on record here), we are already feeling a bit of trepidation regarding what the coming sizzling hot months may hold in store for our province this year.

Much as I wish with all my might that I could state the polar opposite, I do not have any positive updates regarding the serious and incredibly perplexing “new” medical issues that I have been battling since 2020.

Diagnoses are still proving wildly elusive, as is anything even approaching the degree of health care that I should be receiving to help get to the bottom of what on earth is impacting me.

I am no stranger (far from it!) to fighting tirelessly for diagnoses and the overall state of my health. I have been doing that for twenty, going on twenty-one years straight now.

Not, however, let me clarify, for most of these latest health issues themselves, but rather for just about all of my other chronic illnesses that preceded them.

Ever since these new medical challenges entered my life, at the start of each new season I find myself looking towards the end of it, hoping beyond measure that there will be some form of positive health-related changes by then. Some desperately needed help. Some sign that instead of continuing to worsen, things are stabilizing – or perhaps even showing a flicker of improvement.

And though my body and overall state of health continue to deteriorate and weaken further with each passing week, I am resolute in my hope and in my unceasing drive to get the medical answers, help, and treatment(s) that I NEED no matter how long I must battle for each one of those vital things.

On a far more upbeat note, the Spring Equinox is just two days away!

That day is when I will personally be observing the heart of the Ostara season. And while (as is often the case) I will do so in the company of lingering wintertime snow and ice, I am wonderfully excited to celebrate the newness, positivity, rebirth, and fresh possibilities that spring houses.

Then, come the first week of April, we will celebrate my mother’s birthday. I am hopeful that – after two years of not being able to safely do so – we can spend in person with her (just as we were able to do for my own b-day last summer).

I have said it before, but I will happily say it again: my mom’s birthday is akin to a second start of spring for me and always heralds the return of bloom, baby chick, and rainbow season all the more.

And speaking of my birthday, it is now less than four months away. A fact which I can scarcely believe!

First, though, we get to experience the beauty and wonder of spring, as the natural world breaks free of its lengthy wintertime hibernation and brightens our days both literally and figuratively in many enjoyable ways.

Tragically, its author died young at the age of just thirty years old. Leaving, at the time, an unpublished second manuscript that we know with a good degree of certainty existed at one point, but which has sadly been long lost to the hands of time (or perhaps, as some strongly suspect destroyed by one of her sisters).

This engaging article takes a gander at Emily’s iconic inaugural novel, while also digging into the mystery surrounding what her second book may have been about as well as what fate might have befallen that now (presumably) long-lost second manuscript.

–Goth Fast Fashion and Why It Isn’t Always a Good Thing: Regardless of your preferred personal style(s), this post – from Gothic Charm School author Jillian Venters – poses some insightful and important points that apply to a sizable percentage of clothing consumers in many parts of the world.

Fast fashion may be de rigueur in the sphere of 21st-century attire, but as Jillian wisely argues, it is often far from the choice we should be making – at least on a regular basis.

–Lost Women of Science Podcast: This recently launched podcast series (from New York Times reporter Katie Hafner) is on a mission to shine the very well-deserved spotlight on female scientists whose work, and in many cases, names, are little known despite the important contributions they made not only to the field, but to life on earth, point-blank.

The first scientist to be featured is Dorothy Andersen, a physician and pathologist who forever changed the lives of many people around the world when, in 1938, she discovered and defined cystic fibrosis.

As a passionate lover of science (and staunch advocate for women in STEM), I eagerly looking forward to seeing what other women will be featured in future editions of this much-needed podcast.  

–Metal Pens Pre-17^th Century: Much like the link pertaining to sticker organization shared above, this post has a few years under its belt.

It remains a gem all the same and, being a lifelong writer myself, I could not help but share it here – especially since the concept of metal pens is not something many of us associate with times preceding the Victorian era (let alone prior to the 1600s!).

As this article clearly demonstrates, however, they are invention that stretches centuries back in time prior to that point and which have been evolving for hundreds of years now.

–Toronto Based Startup is Combatting Deforestation with Tree Planting Drones: There is no denying the profound importance of reforestation in the battle against the ever more alarming climate crisis that our planet is besieged with these days.

While there are various ways to plant and grow new trees, few are as innovative or original as that from Canadian Flash Forest, which is using drones to plant new trees.

How many trees, you may ask? At the time this article was written last year, no less than 300,000 seed pods had been dropped across specific parts of Canada.

One can only wonder how high that total will continue to climb – and hope, all the while, that this clever technique rapidly catches on around the globe.

In that post, one of the blogs that I featured was of renowned author Loren Rhodes, whose work spans both the fiction and nonfiction spheres.

Those who enjoy books pertaining to taphophilia-related topics may be familiar with Rhodes’ work, including her wonderful books 199 Cemeteries to See Before Your Die and This Morbid Life: Essays.

Thanks to that post, Loren and I connected for the first time ever and have remained in touch since (which is the coolest thing in – pun fully intended – my books, as I have been a big fan of her work for quite some time now).

Loren emailed me a few days ago to share that she would be launching a Kickstarter campaign (which is now live) to help back her newest release: Death’s Garden Revisited: Relationships with Cemeteries.

The title brings together personal reflections from numerous people around the world who have strong connections (for a myriad of different reasons) to cemeteries.

Hold Fast to Dreams

Though it has only been three short months since the Autumn 2021 edition of this post series appeared, for reasons both global and personal, it feels more like two years have elapsed between now and when we said farewell to fall.

Exceedingly few amongst us could have predicted when this winter began that less than a single season later, the world would be rocked once again by an unthinkable tragedy of epic proportion.

That is what has happened though and as with everything that leaves a stamp in indelible ink upon human history, we as a species will be forever impacted by the war in Ukraine.

Assuming, that is, that our species is able to keep going beyond the current generation.

I am nothing if not an optimist, but I am also the poster child for realists everywhere.

Since my early youth, I have studied the first two world wars to a degree that I cannot even begin to measure.

My eyes have taken in hundreds, if not thousands, of books and hours of programming alike pertaining to these world-altering conflicts – especially WW2 and the holocaust.

Beyond those two massive conflicts, I have been drawn to studying and trying to make sense of war, famine, genocide and other forms of the worst possible things human beings can do to one another for as far back as I can recall.

Everything that I have learned, viewed through lenses both philosophical and pragmatic, and laid awake at night thinking about, currently braces me for even more brutal days ahead.

Just like the citizens of Ukraine and countless others around the globe, I hold tight to the belief that the guns will be silenced, the bombs returned to their hiding places, and that the carnage and devastation will end before we as a collective whole do things from which there is no coming back.

As a young girl, one of the first pieces of poetry that I remember learning by heart in school was Dreams by the wonderful American poet, Langston Hughes. It goes as follows:

Hold fast to dreams 
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

Some thirty years on from when I committed those poignant and powerful lines to memory, they remain with me verbatim.

As I lay my head down to sleep each night and again when that ever-brighter dawn wrestles me from slumber, I find Hughes’s words echoing through my thoughts.

They live in my heart and will remain there for as long as it continues to beat.

The dream, in this instance, is one of unwavering hope for an end to the war in Ukraine, the suffering on both sides, and the ability for the survivors to be able to one day piece their shattered lives back together again.

Their futures will not be the same ones that lay before them a few agonizingly short weeks ago, but there is still hope and the prospect of some sort of stability again.

We, as a planet, did in 1918 and again in 1945. Now, before WW3 truly does erupt, let’s stop this madness and do it again in the spring of 2022.

The very fate of the world may be riding on it.

As we look towards the coming season – be it spring on this side of the equator of my beloved autumn for those south of it – there are not words enough to convey how much I hope that you are able to have a safe season wherever you call home.

My deepest wishes for wellness, happiness, and peace to each of you, cherished friends – and to everyone who calls this remarkable planet of ours home.

Some areas of the Northern Hemisphere are already wrapped in the warm embrace of early spring.

Others, including our corner of Western Canada, continue to experience the telltale biting chill and starkly snowy landscape of wintertime proper.

Yet, even if a late-season blizzard comes barreling into town, there are usually captivating stirrings of the season that we are sitting on the precipice of. And that, for those who enjoy spring at least, is certainly a happiness-sparking prospect.

There is not a time in my life when I cannot remember madly adoring butterflies (and moths, too, for that matter – assuming they aren’t turning the contents of my closet into their own personal buffet! ).

It goes without saying that I am far from alone on that front. Countless others throughout the course of human history have been fascinated by butterflies and their immense beauty.

Items depicting or shaped like butterflies never seem to go out of style – and I highly doubt they ever will.

Though, that said, there have certainly been periods when butterfly-themed items experienced a notable spike in popularity.

One such time was the late 1990s and very early 2000, a point in history when I was in my teenage years.

From those super-easy-to-accidentally-bend-open-to-the-point-where-they-break mini butterfly hair clips to butterfly print tees (bonus Y2K points if they were cropped) to the revealing rhinestone covered Emmanuel Ungaro butterfly-shaped top that Mariah Carey famously wore to the VH9’s Divas 2000 tribute to Diana Ross, butterflies were landing everywhere and we could not get enough of them!

These days, with some of the fashions from that era enjoying their own moment in the sartorial spotlight, we are seeing butterflies appear a bit more often again in the clothing and accessory world. Right down to a Gen Z-led revival of those aforementioned butterfly hair clips.

And why not? Fashion was a blast back then. It could be glam and gorgeous, but it could also be silly, fun, girly, sporty, preppy, retro, OTT, sometimes futuristically inspired, and a million other things.

Though I am not slipping on a pair of wide-legged jeans that drag on the ground beneath my chunky (black) platform slip-on sandals, nor rocking a messy bun full of darling butterfly clips atop my head these days, my lifelong passion for butterflies is still going strong.

Butterflies are often one of the first harbingers of spring’s return. Their mosaic-like patterned wings flapping gracefully by our suddenly-once-again-open windows, taking said butterflies to land on the nearest flower, leaf, or other spot they wish to visit.

Recently, I found myself yearning to see real live butterflies again. Alas though, when I looked outside, the only thing fluttering around in the sky was a fresh load of snowflakes.

Knowing that I wanted to make a least one Ostara papercraft project this year, the idea quickly struck me to create one centred around the theme of butterflies.

As a big fan of these beautiful insects, I have numerous craft products that star their depiction. Therefore, I knew this project would not require much rifling around to find the products that I had in mind.

Once I had located them, I made like a busy butterfly and quickly set to work whipping up this vibrant, dynamic springtime greeting card.

While not a hard and fast rule by any means, generally speaking, it is somewhat rare for me to craft with the cheery, confectionary-worthy palette of spring – particularly outside of that season itself.

I tend to favour darker tones and autumn + winter palettes, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy dipping my proverbial proboscis in the nectar that is spring’s upbeat hues from time to time.

Having selected the butterfly print papers that I would use on this project, I let them guide the remainder of the colour palette that I utilized here.

It is undeniably a bright, fun one. But it is toned down a touch by some mellow, sun-baked shades as well as hits of both navy blue and black.

I wanted a warm palette that was at once soothing and energizing at the same time, as that is a combo I often associate with spring itself.

This same menagerie of hues could very easily be used for craft projects intended for later in the spring, too, as well as those throughout the summer. Heck, I think it would even suit Mabon/the Fall Equinox as well.

Though there are a fair number of different colours at play on this card, I made sure to repeat some of them two or more times throughout its design so as to help create a cohesive overall look.

For example, there are three different areas of both pink ombre paper and dark gold metallic cardstock, four of light green cardstock, and some of the fussy cut butterflies are repeated as well.

In addition, all of those fussy cut butterflies have a twinkling line of Diamond (coloured) Stickles running down their thoraxes, thus unifying this bevy of winged friends all the more.

My choice of sequins colours echoes some of the shades found in many of the other elements of this card. This in turn helps them to look all the more coordinated.

This card design – for all that is going on here – is actually quite versatile.

For example, you could easily swap out the “Happy Ostara” sentiment for one pertaining to Easter, Beltane, Mother’s Day, Litha, Lammas, Mabon, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, baby showers, christenings, graduations, retirement, bon voyage, good luck, congratulations, and scores of other events and reasons.

And if you are not feeling the palette, keep the general design but sub in a colour scheme of your choosing.

How to make a beautiful butterfly themed shaker card for Ostara/The Spring Equinox

Begin by making a card base from light green cardstock (if you do not have light green, white cardstock would look lovely here as well).

Cut a piece of white lace trim the vertical length of the card base. Adhere on the left-hand side of the card base so that this trim extends out beyond the card base itself.

From the Conservatory paper pad, cut a piece of (white background) butterfly print border strip paper. Ink it on all four sides with dark blue or navy blue ink. Mat it with a piece of ever-so-slightly larger (than that strip) pink ombre print paper.

Layer and adhere this matted border piece along the left-hand side of the card, overlapping it somewhat with the white trim layer.

Cut a piece of gold metallic cardstock a little bit smaller than your card base. Cut two equal-sized pieces of peachy-pink crochet trim that are the length of the top and bottom of the gold metallic cardstock. Adhere trim to the underside of the top and bottom of that piece of gold cardstock, then adhere the cardstock to the card base.

Next, cut a piece of pink ombre paper (this paper, like all others used throughout this project, hails from the Craft Smith 12”x12” Conservatory paper pad; this is not a terribly old paper pad, so it may still be available at some Michael’s locations) just a tiny bit smaller than the gold cardstock layer. Adhere to gold cardstock layer.

Cut a piece of dark blue + multicolour butterfly print paper a whisper smaller than the previous layer. Adhere to the previous layer.

Next, cut out the border strip that says, “Happiness Blooms Within”. Mat it with an ever-so-slightly larger (than that strip) piece of the same light green cardstock you used for your card base.

Adhere the border strip to the green cardstock and then, using foam tape, pop dots, or a similar dimensional adhesive product, adhere the green cardstock to the far left-hand edge of the previous (butterfly print paper) layer.

Using the larger of the two scalloped edge rectangular dies, cut a rectangle from the pink ombre print paper. Then use the oval die to cut an oval aperture in the middle of that piece. Back the aperture with a piece of the same light green cardstock that you used for the card base. Adhere this scalloped rectangle piece to your previous layers.

Use the smaller of the two scalloped edge rectangle dies (mine comes with an oval opening in the center already; if yours does not, cut an oval the same size as the one on the previous layer in the center of that rectangular piece) to cut a rectangle from metallic gold cardstock.

Cut a small oval-shaped piece of clear acetate and adhere it to the back of the metallic gold rectangle.

Adhere the gold rectangle (with acetate) to the pink ombre rectangle so that the two ovals are perfectly aligned.

Flip that layered piece over and add in the various colours and shapes of sequins.

Use foam to create a border all the way around the oval shaker element opening. Carefully bring the green cardstock + ombre pink layer to the foam adhesive, gingerly apply some pressure to really stick the foam adhesive in place (as we don’t want any sequin going rouge and escaping our shaker! )

Next, measure and cut a piece of the same white trim that you used earlier so that it is the length of the pink ombre layer. Then cut that piece of trim in half, if so desired (only half of it will be showing, so why not save the other half for use on a different project?). Adhere the white trim to the underside of the bottom of the pink ombre layer.

Follow that up by adhering that rectangle layer “stack” to your previous card base layers.

Cut out a label piece using light green cardstock and the small rectangular-shaped butterfly (cut out) label die. Mat this piece with an ever-so-slightly larger piece of gold metallic cardstock. Adhere together.

Then adhere that “stack” a little bit below the central (rectangular layers), so that some of the dark blue + multicolour butterfly print paper is visible between the two-layered areas, as shown.

Use the “happy’ word sticker and black + clear letter stickers to spell out “Happy Ostara” (or the similar-sized sentiment of your choosing).

Take a piece of butterfly print paper from the Conservatory paper pad and fussy cut out several different sizes and colours of butterflies. Adhere them around the card as shown (or however you wish to place them).

Then cut out duplicates of a few of the butterflies. Apply adhesive down the middle of the backside of those butterflies. Gently bend their wings upward a bit, then adhere them down on their corresponding “flat” butterfly layers.

Lastly, take your iridescent glitter glue (be it Stickles or otherwise) and with a light touch, apply a small line down the thorax (middle vertical area) of each butterfly.

I know that the above instructs are a bit lengthy, but in reality, this project is not (IMO) very tricky and it does not take terribly long to complete. The most time-consuming part, by far, is fussy cutting the butterflies out.

I adore fussy cutting, so do not mind. However, if it isn’t your favourite activity or if using scissors for a long time is difficult for you due to health (or any other) reasons, you could use similar sized premade butterfly die cuts, chipboard pieces, butterfly die cuts that you make yourself, punched butterflies, or stickers here instead.

This festive Ostara/Spring Equinix/Easter card is a pleasure to both make and bestow upon someone special in your life – especially if they are a big fan of butterflies.

Ostara – like springtime sunshine – returns with gusto!

North of the equator, March houses the Spring Equinox. From that day onward until the Summer Solstice we will be surrounded by the beauty, gentle warmth, and the general air of happiness that is inherent to spring.

On – or in the general vicinity of – the Spring Equinox, a fair number of witches/Wiccans/Pagans opt to observe the calendar year’s second sabbat: Ostara.

A lively, hope-filled celebration of the earth’s reawakening, new life, new beginnings, optimism, and much more, Ostara is, for many, a jubilant sabbat that bounds into our life as merrily as a baby lamb.

While relatively few who are not witches/Pagans observe Ostara in its 21st-century iteration, many individuals – regardless of their spiritual path – enjoy celebrating the return of spring.

The upcoming Equinox is a stellar time to do just that.

A lot of people in my life were born in the spring and numerous loved ones – including my mom and her only sister – rank springtime as their favourite season.

They are far from the minority there, as spring takes top billing for scores of folks around the world.

It is not hard to see why. After months of freezing temps, long hours of darkness, and the need to wear more layers than you’d find on mille crepe cake, many of us are champing at the bit for even the slightest degree of warmth.

Our patience is, thankfully, rewarded sooner or later. And then, after a few sun-kissed days, as if by magic, we often all but forget the lengthy cold spell that we just endured.

Suddenly our lives are illuminated in fresh, wonderful ways again. And while we know that winter will eventually return, for now, we are as far away seasonally from that point as one can possibly be.

And that, if you ask me, is worth celebrating and sending out a butterfly-themed card or two in honour of!

In 2020, when this blog was mere days old, I shared an entry called 12 Ways to Live a More Magickally Focused Year.

The next year, in February 2021, as a bit of a follow-up to that entry, we explored 14 Ways to Love Your Witchcraft Even More.

The ideas housed in these posts are well worth visiting (or revisiting, as the case may be) now that 2022 is officially underway.

They are, of course, far from the only ways to connect further and deeper with your witchery and/or spirituality (as, indeed, witchcraft can be practiced independently from faith or spirituality).

As dawn rises on a new year, a spiritually significant topic that frequently springs to mind for me is that of our animal spirit guides.

Please note that I did not say “spirit animals”. To my mind and those of many nowadays, this particular term is primarily usually reserved for those of certain ethnic groups, particularly indigenous peoples from around the globe.

While you might be inclined to say that reversing the order of the words is akin to splitting hairs, such is far from the case.

Guides – be they celestial, land-based, otherworldly, amongst the departed, part of the animal realm or otherwise are generally things that anyone on earth can connect with.

Any one of us can feel that we have one or more power/guide animal spirits with us or seek such out if they are not already a part of our lives and spiritual practices.

Many books that were published during the 1990s, 2000s, and even some of those from the 2010s do not necessarily make this distinction and veer into what a lot of folks today would rightly view as cultural appropriation.

I am very happy to say that this is not the case with the first book that I’m reviewing here this year: Spirit Animal Guides: Discover Your Power Animal and the Shamanic Path by Chris Luttichau.

This tremendously lovely book was first published in 2009 (with the title of Animal Spirit Guides) and has subsequently been reprinted over the years.

The copy that I am reviewing in this post was printed in 2019 and was purchased with my own funds.

A contemporary approach to an ancient tradition

Chris Luttichau, this book’s author, is a well-known and highly respected teacher and healer who has traversed the globe learning traditional ways from knowledgeable teachers, practitioners, shamans, and others who possess time-honoured wisdom and approaches to life.

He holds tremendous respect for the earth and its inhabitants, very much including those of the animal variety, and keenly weaves elements of ancestor work, prayer, and dreaming into western (neo)shamanism.

The topic of shamanism enters the picture in Spirit Animal Guides. It is done so with immense reverence, broad strokes, and a reminder to us all that nearly every early culture around the world had spiritual leaders, healers and teachers who today could easily fall under the header of having been shamans.

This is true for my ancestors from locations such as the frozen north of Russia and the verdant Celtic + Norse lands, much as it is for many of us with far-reaching roots to Oceania, North America, Central America, South America, Asia, Africa, and other parts of Europe as well.

In 1998, Chris – a native of Denmark who currently resides in the UK – founded an international teaching organization and accompanying website called the Northern Drum Circle, where he periodically writes on topics pertaining to animal spirit guides and shamanism.

I have never met or interacted with Mr. Luttichau (who travels far afield to hold workshops through North America and Europe). However, it only took a few paragraphs into his book Spirit Animal Guides for me to sense that we would likely hit it off well and share many points in common.

Spirit Animal Guides: Discover Your Power Animal and the Shamanic Path features a gorgeous array of full-colour illustrations by artist Melissa Launay, each of which helps to bring the topics that Luttichau talks about and the selection of animals that he highlights to life all the more.

At 160 pages, this is not a huge book by any means. However, the information it houses far exceeds that of many longer titles on the subject of animal spirit guides.

First split into two sections (Section 1 and Section 2, respectively), then broken down into five chapters (plus a handy index), and further divided into numerous subchapters, this book has an excellent flow to it leads you to want to read it from cover-to-cover.

I have done so now three times since this book entered my life and have enjoyed it all more with each reading.

Spirit Animal Guides by Chris Luttichau begins with the opening lines, “The purpose of the teachings in this book is for you to discover whether they feel true for you. Find out if they awaken a remembrance within yourself and your body of an ancient instinctual bond between you, nature, and animals.”

True to its word, that is precisely what this book not only sets out to do but accomplishes with skill, insight, and inspiration aplenty.

The author addresses the topic of animal spirit guides and the long-held relationship between those who engage in shamanism, while also delving into the fact that humans from many walks of life have sought out (or been chosen by, as the case may be) animal spirit helpers/guides since time immemorial.

Early on in the book, he talks openly about his own spiritual journey, guides readers through methods they can undertake if they are presently seeking an animal spirit guide, and explains what he means when through this book he describes the “animal medicine” associated with the critters featured therein.

Before delving into the selection of animals that Luttichau has chosen to shine the spotlight on, readers are treated to the author’s thoughts pertaining to such areas as “The power animal as your mirror”, (a brief look at) “Shamanism and spiritual reality”, “Dream recall”, “The drum journey”, and various ways of working with your power animal.

In the section regarding shamanism and spiritual reality, Luttichau states that “The teachings given here about power and animals are closely linked to the shamanic tradition. Shamanism does not constitute a religion, and it gives each human being the freedom to explore reality with an open mind and heart to find her or his own truth.”

To my mind, this is one of the most accurate, even-handed and approachable descriptions of this subject I have yet to encounter.

It jives with my own views on the subject, though I readily acknowledge that under the broad banner of shamanism and traditional beliefs, certain elements are closed culture to those outside of those specific groups/ethnicities.

Luttichau discusses how many of us have – or can have if we are not already consciously connected to such – at least one primary “power animal guide”.

He leads readers through ways to find, connect with, and strengthen the bond between themselves and their primary power animal guide, as well as what might be termed secondary animal spirit guides – of which the author states he believes many of us have at least four.

One being our lead animal spirit guide and the other three being members who – along with said power animal – form what the author terms our “Circle of [Animal Spirit] Allies”.

Thusly called because each one is thought to represent or hold a place within the four cardinal points of a circle (those being east, west, north and south, respectively)

He goes on to discuss how each of these four is likely to embody different traits, serve to teach us various lessons, and how we ourselves can be seen in some respects as a manifestation of the creatures that comprise our Circle of Allies.

Furthermore, Luttichau thoughtfully reminds us that “There is no rush to find all four animal spirits in your circle. In fact, it is generally a good idea to take your time, letting the search unfold in a natural, general way”.

The information pertaining to one’s Circle of Allies is housed in the final pages of the book.

Sandwiched between that section and the beneficial introductory topics (some of which I touched on above), one finds the bevy of animal friends that Chris Luttichau opted to shine the spotlight on in this book.

He chose to do so by corralling various animals into groups based on where the critters in each spend the majority of their time.

As such, they are categorized as Earth Animals, Air Animals, Water Animals, and Water/Earth Animals for those creatures (think frogs, otters, and beavers, for example) who divide their time between both environments.

The selection for each group varies a bit in size, though multiple entries appear for each category of animal.

Naturally, no book or other type of resource (i.e., a website on the topic) can possibly cover every animal on earth.

Objectively, there are titles out there with larger amounts of animal spirit guides listed in them.

Yet few that I have personally encountered do as good a job of discussing the symbolism, messages, and “medicine” (aka, important lessons) that is linked to each animal featured therein.

For every critter in Spirit Animal Guides, the author relates an encounter or other type of interaction that he has had throughout his life with said animal.

This lends the book an appealing personal quality which helped me to feel all the more connected to the messages of the various animals Luttichau chats about.

Pulling from the whole of the animal kingdom, the author includes creatures from across the world.

Some are commonplace in many of our lives and/or general environments (i.e., cats, dogs, horses, certain types of birds, and buterflies).

Many we may encounter in person only on very rare occasions and others still are animals that (save perhaps outside of locations such as zoos and animal sanctuaries) we may never come face-to-face with in real life.

The author believes (much as I do, too) that as a general rule one does not pick their animal spirit guide(s) at random or based on their favourite creatures.

Rather, it is usually best/most effective to either intentionally seek your animal allies out or allow them to present themselves to you organically. Often, though not always, via one’s dreams.

Therefore, this book is not a shopping list of animals to pick and choose from to get the animal guide that you most want.

Instead, it is excellent resource if you wish to learn more about the overall subject of power animals and how to connect with your own, while deepening your knowledge of the creaturl(s) that you feel are or may become your own animal spirit guides.

(Remember, most of the time they select us, not the other way around. )

The information housed within this book is also handy if you believe a particular crritter has made its presence known to you as a means of delivering a message or serving as a sign and you wish to uncover what that sign/message may be convaying to you.

After all, many of us will engage with, see, think about, and feel pulled towards a substantial number of animals throughout our lives. Not every one of them will factor heavily into our spiritual journeys or serve as an important sign/message.

However, each can be appreciated and help us to remember how incredibly blessed we are to share our planet with countless thousands of creatures from the tiniest insect to the largest blue whale and everything in between.

How Spirit Animal Guides by Chris Luttichau rates with me

As someone who believes strongly in animal spirit guides, has identified and continues to actively work with their own, and who really enjoys this topic, I have read my fair share of books on the subject over the years (including classic titles from other well-known authors in the field, such as Ted Andrews and Steven D. Farmer).

None has felt quite as inviting or enjoyable to me as Spirit Animal Guides: Discover Your Power Animal and the Shamanic by Chris Luttichau.

If you are looking for more of a straight-up reference book, there are titles with larger selections of animals out there. Yet, few of possess the earnest heart and captivating spirit of Luttichau’s look at the topic.

Each time I have reached the last page of this book, I have found myself wishing that it went on for hundreds more.

The author has a friendly, inviting way of writing (not unlike that of David Dillard-Wright, whose book A Mindful Evening I reviewed here last summer) and excels at informatively teaching his readers, while never coming across as preachy, condescending, or know-it-allish.

This makes the book all the more of a wonderful reading experience and helps to cement it as a title many of us are apt to reread in its entirety and/or dip into as needed throughout the course of our lives.

Spirit Animal Guides is not specifically geared towards witches or Pagans. It is open to, and inclusive of, those from a vast swath of different spiritual paths and belief systems.

Anyone who has positive intentions and genuinely wishes to seek out their power animal(s) can do so throughout the course of their life.

I adore the broadness of this book, the methods used for finding and building a bond with one’s animal spirit allies, and the respect that is paid both to the subject of shamanism and to the members of the animal kingdom that are highlighted throughout its 160 pages.

Whether you have numerous books on your shelf pertaining to power animals or are eager to pick up your first, Spirit Animal Guides is a fantastic title that I very highly recommend.

Working on a scale of 1 – 5, with five being the highest possible rating, I would give Spirit Animal Guides by Chris Luttichau 5 stars out of 5.

Lammas, which is also known by such names as Lughnasadh, Lugnasad, Lughnasa, Lúnasa, Lama-fada, Lammas Day, Lammastide, First Harvest, and Loaf Day (though this is a Christian name for Lammas and little-used within the Pagan community), is a Gaelic festival that celebrates and honours the gradual decline of summer and the beginning of the harvest filled autumn months ahead.

In particular, this sabbat emphasizes the importance and rich cultural significance of the grain harvest. It is also a time to give thanks, to allow the vibrant golden sunlight of August to help illuminate our lives and futures, and to delight in the nature centred gifts of both summer and early fall.

As with each of the Pagan sabbats, Lammas has many different associations, from various gods and goddesses to many delicious foods, assorted seasonal colours to luminous bonfires.

Signs and elements of the harvest season are a terrific way to deepen your connection to Lammas/Lughnasadh.

Some of the most common and well suited of these include the following (note, this is not an exhaustive list of all the various Lammas correspondences):

• Sheaves of wheat
• Oats, barley, and rye
• Corn dolls
• Ears of corn (including gorgeously multi-hued Indian corn)
• Cornhusks
• Bales of straw and hay
• Straw braids
• Baskets
• Heather
• Sage
• Thyme
• Rosemary
• Cinnamon
• Saffron
• Yarrow
• Goldenrod
• Meadowsweet
• Sunflowers
• Acorns
• Leaves that are in season
• Grapevines
• Apples
• Pears
• Plums
• Blackberries
• Honey and honeycomb
• Loaves of bread and similar baked goods (I cannot overstate, though, how much these foods can be purely symbolic or, if desired, made from whatever ingredients are right for you, if you do or cannot eat wheat and/or any other grains)

• Harvest related hand tools such as sickles
• The metal iron (and various yellow/orange/gold coloured metals, such as brass, bronze, gold, and copper)
• The sun
• Sun and harvest coloured crystals and stones such as carnelian, sunstone, agate, peridot, citrine, jasper, amber, desert rose, and pyrite
• The god Lugh (from whose name the word Lughnasadh is derived)
• Numerous different animals

It is the latter of these meaningful spiritually and magickally connected correspondences that we are going to explore in this post.

When is Lammas/Lughnasadh celebrated?

As with each of the eight neo-Pagan sabbats that some witches, Wiccans and Pagans choose to observe, the precise date for Lammas/Lughnasadh is somewhat flexible and open to personal interpretation.

Broadly speaking, in the Western Hemisphere, Lammas is generally observed between July 31st and August 7^th.

August 1^st and August 2^nd are two of the most common days on which many people choose to observe Lammas/Lughnasadh.

You can opt to celebrate Lammas for a single day, two days, or for as many days as feels right to you and your practice each year.

Technically speaking, Lammas “officially” falls annually on the date that is precisely halfway between the Summer Solstice (Litha) and the Fall Equinox (Mabon).

Why it’s important to celebrate and honour the animals of Lammas

Each sabbat brings certain animals to the fore in various ways. It may be their mating or birthing season, the time when they’re most active, or even when (especially historically) they were slaughtered.

Depending on your personal beliefs, this last point may not come into direct play in your own Lammas celebrations.

It is not a central part of this post and the information provided herein applies every bit as much to meat-eaters as it does to vegans, vegetarians, and others who forgo consuming animal products.

Channelling, calling upon, honouring, celebrating, and learning more about the animals that are associated with Lughnasadh is a poignant way to deepen your connection both with this sabbat and with nature itself.

You may find that you feel particularly drawn to one or more animals and/or their archetypal energy. Lean into that connection and try to incorporate the energy, symbolism, or other aspects of said creature into your Lammas workings.

The following fifteen animals are ones that have longstanding historic ties to this chapter of the year, and in some instances, directly with Lammas itself.

By acknowledging and celebrating the animal kingdom at Lammas, we involve that natural world in our practice all the more.

Please note: While any one of these fifteen critters could be a person’s own spiritual animal guide/ally (aka, totem animal or power animal), this post does not directly focus on that aspect of working with animal energies or archetypes.

15 animal correspondences to work with at Lammas

Bats: While highly associated with Halloween/Samhain and the month of October, summertime is often one of the easiest times to spot or hear these beautiful winged creatures. Many bats hibernate for the winter, but they’re often out in full force during the sunniest months of the year, when their food sources are typically most abundant.

Historically, part of the reason that bats were associated with the harvest season is because they were attracted to the bonfires and burn piles that were part and parcel with late summer and fall time. To this day, these classic activities still attract bugs and the bats that happily feed on them in various parts of the world.

Many is the warm summer night when I’ve spotted or heard the telltale sound of bats overhead, including those who fly over and hunt in crop-rich fields of local farms.

For those who love to start their autumn celebrations with the return of Lammas, bats can be a perfect animal to work with as bridge and transitionary energy between summer and fall time.

Magickal correspondences for bats: Across the globe, bats have long been closely associated with many beliefs, religions, legends and folklore. So much so, that it’s likely a whole book could be penned on the subject. Many modern witches feel a strong connection to this nocturnal creature and may opt to work with bat energies/imagery throughout the year or just during the harvest season.

Bats symbolize intuition a wide range of thing, some of which include messages from your subconscious mind, psychic abilities and visions, past lives, being highly sensitive/empathic, transition, rebirth, change, new beginnings, powerful omens, astral travel, shape-shifting, illusion, dreams, visions, journeying, darkness, the night, moon magick, invisibility, rising above challenges, vampires, death, grief, darkness, letting go of fear, and freedom.

Bears: Equal parts cute, strong, and furious, bears are one of the most powerful and highly revered animals of the forest. While they’re famous for hibernating through the snowy winter months, bears also well known for being active, feasting on available food sources such as fish and berries, and being more likely to be encountered during the summer and early fall.

Bears help to remind us of the importance of thinking ahead and preparing for the darkness and challenges that come with the colder half of the year.

Magickal correspondences for bears: A widely respected and beloved animal, bears and bear energy/bear spirits have held an importance place in many cultures since time immemorial.

Today, some of the spiritual correspondences and associations that are most closely connected with bears include courage, strength, fortitude, confidence, fearlessness, standing up for yourself or others, leadership, stability, grounding, solitude, fertility, Gaia, the environment, family ties, healing, serenity, rest, regeneration, planning ahead, resourcefulness, shamanism, the harvest (including ties to the goddesses Diana and Artemis), and the need to tackle fears and issues head on.

Bees: While a sizable percentage of the world’s food production is now done on a commercial scale and the hand of humankind has (for better or worse, depending on your viewpoint) shaped the way we grow, harvest, and even eat the earth’s bounty, the collective agricultural process would not be fully possible without the help of this incredibly industrious little creature.

The ways in which bees are vital to the earth are myriad. These hardworking little creatures put in overtime during the summer months as they gather pollen and produce the delicious honey enjoyed by many the world over.

Honey is amongst the foods most often associated with, and feasted upon, during the Lammas season. It’s vibrant golden colour symbols the sun and warmth of late summer, it’s sweetness stands for the goodness and bounty of life at this time of the year, and honey’s nourishing qualities remind us of us restorative and revitalizing qualities of summer months. Both for ourselves and the earth in general.

Magickal correspondences for bees: Tiny though they are, honeybees have a sizable list of spiritual associations and correspondence, which, as with many other entries on this list, are often rooted far back in the annals of history.

Bees can be a powerful representation and reminder of everyday blessings and miracles, of the cyclical nature of the seasons, teamwork, community, ambition, determination, hard work, tenacity, time management, accomplishment, energy, the sun and sunlight, good news, love, sweetness, protection, support, personal relationships, stick-to-itness, pollinating new ideas or goals, both life and death, traditions, enjoying the fruits of your labours, insight, and intuition.

Calves (and cattle in general): Many calves are born in the spring or early summer, which means that Lammas often sees them experiencing their first August and harvest season.

Calves and cows have long been an important food and material source, as well as a key player at many an agricultural and country fair the world over.

In some cultures, including the ancient Celts, cattle were (and still are in various parts of the world) a strong social indicator of an individual or family’s wealth and standing in the community.

Throughout time, cattle have been used primarily as a source of milk and meat, wealth, and as a trading or bartering commodity.

This has often meant that the act of slaughtering a cow – which may have been done prior to winter – for consumption was truly a special event that was generally reserved for highly important times of the year.

As well, historically, if calves were old enough, they frequently weaned around the time of Lammas, which deepened their connection to the later weeks of the summer and early autumn all the more.

Magickal correspondences for calves: Most of the spiritual associations and correspondences for calves are those shared with adult cows, however a few such as honouring one’s inner child and being young at heart may resonate all the more though the energy/spirit of calves.

Like cows, the symbolism of calves includes such things as thoughtfulness, abundance, patience, achieving your goals, happiness, positive attitudes, serenity, good luck, wealth, agriculture, effective management of resources, family and community ties, fertility, parenting, stability, strength, and living life to the full.

Hedgehogs: In the 21^st century, it can be easy to think of hedgehogs as pets first and foremost. However, long before they were brought into our homes – and to this day in various parts of the world – hedgehogs roamed wild and free.

Hedgehogs – a member of the shrew family – are predominately nocturnal creatures. This point, much as with bats, lends them a natural association with the coming darkness of autumn.

Adorable, spikey little hedgehogs are often spotted in nature during the summer and fall, and many a gorgeous photo has been captured over the years of them atop or interspersed amongst vibrant fall foliage that has tumbled to the forest or even backyard floor.

Interestingly, like bees, hedgehogs are linked to the hunting goddess Artemis, and thus, by extension may represent the hunting season itself (which, for some hunters, transpires in the late summer on into the fall).

This might go without saying, but of course, one does not need or want to hunt to feel a strong tie with hedgehog energy. Not in the slightest!

Magickal correspondences for hedgehogs: Small though they may be, hedgehogs are another example of a pint sized critter with abundant and widespread cultural significance.

They were written about by no less famous names as Pliny and Plutarch, held strong ties to the Mother Goddess, Ishtar, of the Sumerians, and have been included in the folklore, superstitions, beliefs, and even magickal workings of various cultures around the globe.

Spiritually, hedgehogs are closely associated with curiosity, intelligence, perception, intuition, stability, strength, gentleness, defense, protection, marching to the beat of your own drum, ignoring naysayers, the need for personal space, self-care, embracing your natural gifts and talents, not taking things too personally, exploration, weather patterns, weather magick, gardening, nature, and resourcefulness.

Horses: As with many other animals, both domesticated and wild, horses commonly give birth to their young in the spring or early summer. This alone helps to ensure horses a place on a list of Lammas animals, but it far from the only reason why they appear here.

Horses were, and sometimes still are, often invaluable to the agricultural process. They helped to pull machinery, transport goods to market, were shown at agricultural fairs, and much more.

Traditionally, in Ireland, Lughnasadh was celebrated with games of skill and prowess, including horse races. This point ties horses to the First Harvest all the more.

Genetic research shows that horses were domesticated about 6,000 years ago in areas that are today comprised of the Ukraine, plus parts of Kazakhstan and Russia.

However, early cave art dating back to 25,000+ years depicts wild horses and clearly indicates the significance that these majestic animals already had – be it as a food source, spiritually, aesthetically, or otherwise – for our ancestors.

As humanity began shifting towards communal living and an agrarian lifestyle, and arguably all the more so once horses began to be domesticated, the importance of this mighty powerhouse of an animal only deepened across many cultures.

Magickal correspondences for horses: These days, as a collective whole, humanity no longer relies on horses to the extent that it once did. Thankfully though, these incredible creatures are still beloved by many and it’s safe to say that horses continue to hold an esteemed place in today’s high tech, automobile filled world.

Scores of magickal and spiritual correspondences, symbolism, and associations are linked to horses. Some of the key ones of which include such things as awareness, stability, strength, clairvoyance, endurance, freedom, hope, travel, agility, bravery, friendship, close bonds and ties, family, astral travel, freedom, new opportunities, life, protection and guardianship, stamina, warnings, cooperation, farming, history, ancestry, balance, athleticism, freedom, and being free-spirited.  

As a fascinating side note regarding horses and the season of Lammas, the month of August derives its name from the Roman August Caesar, the first emperor of Rome. Caesar’s family is known to have been involved heavily with horsemanship. And, as a whole, the Roman people held the horse in high esteem, linking it closely with Mars, their god of war.

Also linking horses to this time of the year, is the Celtic zodiac, for which the horse is the animal symbol most closely associated with the period of July 8^th to August 4^th.

After which, the salmon – which we’ll dive into (pun intended) later in this post is in the Celtic zodiac spotlight from August 5^th until September 1^st.

Lions: Lions may not be an everyday sight or physical presence for many of us and they are not as involved with or connected to the harvest season as, say cows and horses. However, the fact that the lion is the animal symbol for the Leo zodiac sign – which encompasses the date range for Lammas – ensures it a place on this list.

Lions are incredibly strong, resilient, brave, skilled, incredible animals. They have long been revered and worshiped by various cultures, from ancient Egyptians to the Chinese, and remain a popular symbol throughout society to this day.

Magickal correspondences for lions: With their golden manes and fur, lions look as though they could have been painted with the very colours of the grain harvest season itself.

Lions have a rich and varied list of spiritual associations and correspondences, amongst which one finds such attributes and connections as divination, spiritual alignment, fire, the sun, extroversion, power, bravery, justice, dignity, strength, self-confidence, patience and timing, protection, teamwork, leadership, charisma, regality, survival, letting your inner voice self shine and your voice be heard, manifestation, confidence, independence, creativity, and, unquestionably, loyalty.

Mice: It’s fair to say that mice might not be the first animal everyone would want to see – at least not in their own homes (save for pet mice, of course!). Yet the fact that this cute little critter falls under the header of vermin doesn’t mean it isn’t a wonderful, valuable, and relevant animal.

Mice are all of those things and more. They are a hugely important part of the ecosystem and animal food chain worldwide.

Though farmers are rarely happy about this point, mice love to nibble on the offerings in ripe fields and grain stores. They, like all animals, are just doing what comes instinctually to them and filling up on as much food as they can before the lean months of winter return.

While a fear of mice is understandable, it might help to know that these sweet little creatures are intelligent, friendly, happy, and hardworking. Not to mention, IMO, downright adorable.

My husband and I often spot mice when taking evening walks in our (corn farm filled) neighbourhood. Far from fearing them, we delight in watching these darling rodents skittering around in the moonlight.

Magickal correspondences for mice: Frequently, mice are on the go. Their sense of productivity and stamina are but two of the attributes, correspondences, and associations linked to the humble mouse.

Additional symbolism and meanings connected to mice include thinking outside of the box, thriftiness, heling others, endurance, creativity, attention to detail, shyness, introversion, discovery, quietness, modesty, cleanliness, awareness, serenity, resourcefulness, grounding, teaching, quietness, cleanliness, stealth, home life, and a connection to the god Apollo.

Pigs: One of the first animals to have been domesticated, pigs have lived alongside humans since approximately 8500 BCE, and are now believed based on mitochondrial DNA studies to have been present in parts of Europe since at least 4500 BCE.

As such, pigs are closely woven to the food and agricultural landscapes of humanity.

Some groups of people have long eschewed the consumption of pork products (often on religious or ethical grounds). Yet, for many others, the pig has been an extremely valuable food source throughout history and remains one of the most popular dietary sources of meat to this day.

Traditionally, and again still to this day in some parts of the world, pigs that were to be consumed were generally slaughtered during the fall. The meat they provided was then generally promptly preserved (smoking, drying, brining, salting, freezing, etc) and consumed until fresh meat was readily and realistically obtainable again in the coming year.

Magickal correspondences for pigs: An interesting array of attributes and correspondences are linked to pigs. Some traits reflect their real-life characters, others are more symbolic.

Pigs are associated with such areas as intelligence, tenacity, ambition, fertility, a hearty or rugged disposition, laziness, farm life, traditions, good luck, success, opportunity, prosperity, renewal, regeneration, contentment, fertility, family, close bonds, as an omen of positive things to come, happiness, and allowing yourself to kick back and enjoy life.

Ravens: Much like bears, horses, snakes and some of the other entries in this post, ravens have long been held in high esteem and connected to the deities and spiritual beliefs of many different cultures (including Odin from the Norse pantheon, who is believed to have two loyal ravens, Huginn and Muninn – whose names mean “thought” and “memory” – that traverse the world to bring important information back to him).

In the case of Lughnasadh, one reason why ravens come into play is because of the connection between the god Lugh – from whose name, as touched on above, the word Lughnasadh itself derives – and these intelligent birds.

The Goddess Morrigan (aka, The Morrigan) is another deity from Northern Europe who is closely associated with Ravens, and who it makes a lot of sense to connect with/honour/reflect upon as we gradually begin our descent into the darker half of the year.

Magickal correspondences for ravens: The symbolism and connections that ravens hold are legion.

Some of the many associations that are tied to ravens include loyalty (ravens themselves often mate for life), fidelity, courage, knowledge, wisdom, introspection, privacy, divination, sexuality, cronehood, ancestry, magic/magick, playfulness, creativity, darkness, renewal, traversing the veil, changes in consciousness, messages and omens, awareness, warnings, synchronicity, the dark moon, death and the afterlife, mysteries, introspection, rebirth, self-awareness and self-reflection, transformation, secrets, shape-shifting, travel, new paths, hope, integrity, eloquence, remembrance, communication, determination, fall and winter (many ravens mate in or around January), fields ready for the harvest, forests, and forging.

Roosters: Another bird that is connected to the sabbat of Lammas is the rooster. These charismatic and boisterous birds are a centuries-old symbol of farm life and agriculture. Their telltale call has woken countless souls up over the course of time – whether they wanted this feathered alarm clock to do so or not.

Come the harvest season, rising early and putting in long days was often a must to help ensure that the crops were brought in on time and ample food stored and/or readied to be traded and sold for other necessary foodstuffs in preparation for the lengthy winter months ahead.

Chickens and roosters were amongst the earliest domesticated animals. They have long been a staple food source for many cultures, and have also been used in spiritual, religious and ceremonial contexts (including, in some instances, as sacrificial animals) for many thousands of years.

Fascinatingly, new research indicates that in Ancient Britain, chickens (as well as hares) may have been highly revered spiritually before they were used as food sources (or perhaps, I cannot help but wonder, in tandem with such).

Another point that links Lammas time to roosters is the colour palette shared between the two. Reds, oranges, caramel browns, dusty whites, and flaxen yellows are all hues that we begin to see a greater degree of in the shifting seasons come to this point in the summer.

Few areas are decked out in full-on fall time finery quite yet, but many are laced in stunning golds, straws, orangey reds, sun-bleached creams, and other shades that speak to the gradual shift towards autumn time.

Magickal correspondences for roosters: Many of the symbolisms and associations for chickens hold true for roosters as well.

That said, roosters are not without their own specific spiritual and historical correspondences, amongst which you find such things as divination, protection, safety, alertness, warnings, awareness, boldness, realizations, personal growth and development, discovery, fertility, watchfulness, farming, hearth and home, speaking up, patience, getting the root of issues or concerns, becoming or staying grounded, community, being social, determination, balance, nourishment (be it in terms of food, spiritual or emotional well-being, etc), enthusiasm, optimism, rebirth, sacrifice, potential, and the sun/solar energy.

. Salmon: In the Canadian province where I live, British Columbia, a truly awe-inspiring event transpires care of the extraordinary salmon runs that happen once every four years.

Though I have not yet witnessed one in person myself, I know others who have and the reverence with which they speak of these marvels of nature has more than helped me to add witnessing a fall time salmon run to my proverbial bucket list.

In general, throughout the western hemisphere, salmon are frequently associated with summer and fall time.

It is during these sun-kissed months that salmon are often plentiful, fishing is abundant, and various animals, including bears, are loading up on delicious salmon to help see them through the lean winter months that lay ahead.

Salmon are powerful, determined animals who help to remind us of how important it is to work, and even fight, for those areas of our lives that matter most to our survival and well-being, as well as our inner sense of happiness and contentment.

Magickal correspondences for salmon: Strong, feisty, and incredibly driven, salmon hold deep spiritual connections for various cultures around the world (including many indigenous and First Nations Peoples).

They are really are an inspiring fish and one with many different associated spiritual, magickal, and meaningful correspondences.

These include connections such as perseverance, determination, steadfastness, staying the course, being goal-oriented, intuition, hope, self-confidence, strength, travel, change, overcoming barriers, being highly sensitive/empathic, insight, psychic abilities, spiritually, traditions, ancestry and genealogy, family, creativity, art, courage, hard work, passion, knowledge, instinct, transformation, and returning to one’s roots.

Snakes: If ever there was a warmth-loving animal, snakes are it! Sure, both cats and lizards are renowned for basking in the sunlight, too, but snakes and summer just seem to go hand-in-hand.

Granted, the fact that I’ve often lived in areas where snakes – be they harmless garters, hefty rubber boas (the most northerly of all boas), or dangerous rattlesnakes – reside may play a part in why I personally link snakes with summer and early fall.

Yet, my own associations aside, snakes and this chapter of the year are a truly ancient combo and one that warrants connecting with come Lammas season.

Snakes are resourceful, clever, patient, territorial, and beautiful. Their importance to the spirituality and beliefs of countless cultures throughout time is legendary.

Like many animals, snakes will try to bulk up for the chilly winter months. Though they do not technically go into full-blown hibernation, in colder climates, most wild snakes will enter a similar state of being, which is called brumation.

This process differs from the hibernation that some mammals experience in various ways One is that, periodically, some snakes will wake and seek out water and food to help sustain them throughout the chilliest chapter of the year. The fact that snakes are using less energy means that they are able to go for longer stretches than usual between feedings when in a state of brumation.

It is interesting to reflect on, and compare, some of the things that we may do less (or, conversely more) of during the icy months to help us survive and thrive.

At Lammas, think upon this subject and look for ways that you can realistically help to ensure that you have a smoother, more enjoyable and well-prepared autumn, winter, and early spring this time around.

Magickal correspondences for snakes: Scores upon scores of spiritual, magickal, mythical, and otherwise meaningful associations and correspondences (not to mention ties to various deities) have been ascribed to snakes for countless generations.

From the past and the present alike, some of the most powerful symbolism and correspondences for snakes include transformation, regeneration, rebirth, new beginnings, transmutation, secrecy, self-defence, balance, acceptance, dreaming, fluidity, serenity, divination, wisdom, creativity, the arts, both life and death, order, health, healing, medicine, fertility, protection, good luck, bonds and connections, cycles, sexuality, passion, warmth, temperament, witchcraft, folk magick, and standing your ground.

Squirrels: Much like chipmunks, squirrels have a tendency to appear more often during the later weeks of summer and into the early fall, as they quite literally “squirrel” away (so hence the term) caches of food for the approaching winter months.

Sweet and playful, shy and yet also inquisitive at times, squirrels are one of the smaller critters on this list of Lughnasadh animals, but don’t let their diminutive stature fool you.

Spiritually, squirrels are powerhouses of meaning, connection, animal energy, and inspiring resourcefulness alike.

Magickal correspondences for squirrels: These adorable little creatures are here to remind us to have fun and savour life – which includes the beauty and blessings of the early harvest season.

Spiritually, historically, and magickally, there are numerous correspondences for squirrels, amongst which one finds alertness, preparation, resourcefulness, manifestation, socializing, planning, goals, an omen of good luck or a windfall, success, acceptance, awareness, gathering, comfort, home life, grounding, Mother Earth/Gaia, balance, kindness and benevolence, being active, contentment, sweetness, happiness, having a zeal for life, and the foliage, nuts, seeds, and produce of the harvest season.

Stages (and deer in general): Last, but certainly not least on this list of Lammas animal correspondences, we come to the powerful and incredibly majestic stag.

Deer in general share a connection with summer and fall. Those who’ve given birth to young often have fawns with them at this time of the year and it is not uncommon to spot mothers and babies or juveniles together.

Our backyard encompasses (and backs onto an even larger) swath of woodland. Deer – at times as many as ten or more at once – are a near-daily occurrence on our property. Their presence is comforting, meaningful, and extraordinarily beautiful.

I have a strong, far-reaching spiritual connection with deer and have worked this caring, sweet, strong and special creature as one of my primary animal allies/guides for many years now.

I am far from alone in having formed a spiritual connection with deer. This mainstay of many a forest, and in more recent times, some urban settings as well, has been revered, worshiped, and celebrated by scores of cultures across the ages.

Come the tail end of summer and straight on into the fall, it is not uncommon to spot deer, including stags with their breathtaking racks of antlers. If you’re extra lucky, you might even see one surrounded by the radiant foliage of autumn.

Stags are strong, independent, and commanding. Amongst many things, stags can help to remind us of how much we’ve (hopefully) grown and developed at this point in the year, to engage with the wild world beyond our front door, and that standing tall and having self-confidence can often take us far in life.

Magickal correspondences for stags: Not surprisingly, stags share many of the same associations with deer. Swirled into the mix, however, are a few things that are all the more the domain of bucks and stags.

Some of the strongest spiritual and magickal associations for deer and bucks include guidance, watchfulness, courage, strength, fertility, wisdom, creativity, kindness to ourselves and others, serenity, children, family ties, innocence, being sweet-natured, leadership, confidence, stamina, compassion, generosity, grace, having a sharp eye and seeing what others may miss, safety, comfort, alertness, regrowth, spirituality, vision, clarity, honesty, and standing up for your principles/beliefs, as well as what is right and just.

Ways to work with animal correspondences at Lammas

There are scores of ways to involve animals in your Lammas celebrations. The following are some of the many different ideas on this front that may resonate with you.

Let your intuition, what you have available or can make, and the spirit of the sabbat guide you in how you opt to work with animals during Lughnasadh.

-Take or print (royalty-free/public domain/purchased stock) photos of the animals you’re working with this Lammas. Put them up around your altar, home, use one as your screensaver or home screen image, create a craft project with them, use them in spell work, etc..

-Call upon the spirit/energy of your chosen animal(s) when working spells or performing certain rituals throughout the Lammas season.

-Create a piece of art or a craft project of any you desire that features the animal(s) of your choosing.

-Place figurines, toys, or carved or sculpted animals on your altar or elsewhere in your home.

-Create sigils from either the name or shape of the animal.

-Work with a deity that is associated with the Lammas animal of your choosing.

-Paint rocks, shells, pieces of found wood or other ethically sourced natural surfaces to depict the animal you wish. Charge this/these creation in the radiant light of the Lammas sunshine, to imbue them all the more with the energy of the year’s first harvest season sabbat.

-Talk/pray to the spirit or energy of a given animal. You can also reflect on/call upon them when meditating.

-Wear a piece of jewelry or clothing that depicts one of the animals that you’re focusing on throughout Lammas. Cleanse and bless it before wearing. Pay attention to how you feel and any impressions or powerful/sudden thoughts or feelings you get while wearing it.  

-If you are personally comfortable working with actual animal products and can ethically source body parts (hair, fur, feathers, bones, shed skin, etc) from the animal of your choosing, the sky is the limit as to the variety of magical applications you can use these kinds of items for them.

If you prefer not to use actual animal products, you could make or buy faux versions or visual representations of them, such as clay, wood, paper, or ceramic iterations.

While artificial animal body parts may not retain the same energy and life essence as those obtained from actual animals, the symbolism, intention and general representation will generally all hold true and remain valuable, potent components in your magickal workings.

-Cook, bake or decorate Lammas foods, such as breads or cookies, in the shape of your desired animal.

-Create a journal, BOS, or grimoire entry about the Lammas animal(s) that resonate with you most this year. Discuss why they strike a chord with you and take note of any ways that you work with or honour these animals during the Lammas season.

-Reflect on what a given animal’s telltale strengths and weaknesses are and how they may be presenting to you as a message, confirmation or awakening to some aspect of your own life at present.

-If you have (or wish to make) a tarot or oracle card that depicts the animal you’re focusing on, place it in a spot where you’ll connect with it often, such as your altar or a nightstand.

Doing so will help you to reflect on and connect with the energy of the animal all the more, while also potentially helping you to grow closer in your relationship with this particular creature and what it may trying to impart to you.

-Donate to a charity or rescue organization that works with the animal of your choosing.

-Volunteer your time to work with animals of any sort in some helpful capacity.

-Should it be possible and safe to do so, view a Lammas animal in the wild or in an enclosed setting, such as a petting zoo or animal sanctuary. If you are able to, again, safely, touch, feed, ride, etc that animal during Lammas season, all the more wonderful! But if not, just being in the general physical vicinity of that animal can have awesome personal and spiritual effects.

-Keep an eye out for any animals – be they included in this post or not – that appear to you immediately before and during the Lammas season.

While some animal sightings and encounters are run-of-the-mill, others hold deeper personal meaning and significance.

If you feel that animal has presented itself to you in person, while meditating, hedgeriding, or in a dream and has a message or deeper meaning that it is trying to convey, ask the spirit energy of that animal to clarify what it is saying, research associated meanings of that animal in books or online. Or, alternatively, assign your own personally relevant meaning to the presence of this animal in your life right now.

-Take note of the number of times that a given animal presents itself to you in any form (real life, dreams, brought up by others to you in conversation, repeated spotted in the media or books, etc) and consider if that number itself holds as significance.

If you feel that it does, apply numerological or angel number meanings to the number of times that you saw that particular animal. Sometimes the number of sightings itself matters just as much as the animal who helped to deliver it to you.

-Thank the animals, both the living ones that exist in the world and the spirit/energy of said creatures, for their part in your Lughnasadh activities and your life in general.

And do keep in mind that while this post is focused on Lammas, you can certainly apply the suggestions above the whole year through when working spiritually/magickally with animals.

Lammas ushers in the beginning of the harvest season and in turn, of fall itself. While the calendar tells us that we still have more than six weeks left to go until the Autumn Equinox returns, deep in the earth, nature is stirring and preparing to glide from one season to the next.

One of the loveliest ways to celebrate Lughnasadh, or any sabbat for that matter, is by connecting with the animals that are especially associated with, or most common, during this chapter of the year.

This act is an ancient one, as animals have played roles both practical and spiritual in the lives of humans for untold millennia.

Before the advent of mechanized farming methods, the harvest was done by human and animal power. It was – and often still is – hard, labour intensive work that was vital to help ensure the well-being and survival our species.

As well, some of the animals discussed in this post provided meat, fur, feathers or other organic materials that were invaluable in the lives of those who came before us.

Today, making animals a part of our Lammas happenings is both fun and meaningful. It reminds us of those who came before, while also helping to ground us to the present, including the state of the ecological sphere, our own spiritual journey, and the members of the animal kingdom that cross our paths or which we opt to purposely focus on.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish you a radiant, meaningful, and deeply blessed Lammas season, sweet friends.

Finally, a book about dog magic!

While numerous books, many charming and worth reading if the subject interests you, have been penned over the years about cat magic (magick), cats as familiars, and the historical connections between cats and magickal folks, far fewer have yet to emerge about dog magick.

As a lifelong dog lover and current dog mama, I was elated to see The Book of Dog Magic: Spells, Charms and Tales by Sophia and Denny Sargent hit bookstore shelves back in June of 2016.

I purchased my copy a little over a year later and just had the chance to dive into it at the start of this winter.

It’s high time we have a book about dog magic, but is this the title many magickally inclined canine lovers the world over have been waiting for?

What is Dog Magic about?

This book aims to cover elements of the longstanding history between dogs and magickal practices, connections to various deities from around the world, and their meaningful presence in the lives and spiritual workings of those in the 21^st century.

Woven through the myriad topics covered in Dog Magic, one finds dozens of different spells pertaining to dogs and dog magick. Most are fairly straightforward to carry out, generally requiring relatively commonplace ingredients.

The book is divided into the following ten chapters:

Chapter 1: The Magickal Dog & Dog Spells – An Introduction

Chapter 2: Your Spirit Dog – Invoking and Finding Your Dog Familiar

Chapter 3: Dog Love – Bonding With & Loving Your Dog

Throughout Dog Magic, the authors – who clearly adore and respect dogs immensely – discuss their own cherished dog (who sadly passed away at the age of 17, before the writing of this book was complete) on many occasions. I found this deeply heartwarming.

Just as I did the fact that the authors (both of whom have published other magickal and spiritual related books prior to this title) make a point of mentioning that dog ownership is something that must be given serious consideration before one takes on the long-term commitment of bringing a dog into their lives.

Dog magick is a sweet book written in a friendly, approachable tone. The historical and spiritually centered information it houses are fascinating, the plentiful spells are sure to appeal to many, and the general premise of the book is apt to speak to a lot of dog lovers.

I appreciate that this book, when looking at historical, cultural, religious and spiritual topics did a fairhanded job of including information and legends/myths from a wide range of cultures around the world.

It is not uncommon for magickal books that are intended to cover a broad topic to focus exclusively, or nearly so, on European history and lore (perhaps with a wee bit of Asian thrown into the mix), so it was refreshing to see references to cultures the world over, from Africa to Australia, India to America.

However, the fact that the authors also suggest working with and/or invoking deities from many different cultures and their respective pantheons may not sit entirely well with all readers, especially those who prefer to work with a specific pantheon or group of deities from one particular part of the world.

I feel that Sophia and Denny put thought and research into the choice of deities that they partnered with their spells. While such is not explicated stated in the book, it’s fair to say that you can opt to invoke the deity of your choosing or to preform non-deity related magick altogether, if you prefer.

How feasible are the magickal workings in Dog Magic?

The spells and workings in this book are a combination of those that ask the practitioner to involve their own dog (if they have one) and others that are done without direct involvement from a living animal.

While there are certainly some calm, easygoing, very well behaved dogs out there that may happily take part in their owner’s magickal workings, at the end of the day, there are plenty of dogs that will try to chew your candles, want to play tug-o-war with your altar cloth, and try to run off with your crystals to bury them in the backyard.

In other words, as endearing and appealing a thought as involving your dog directly in your magickal workings may be, the reality is that this isn’t possible for everyone – at least not in regard to every spell laid out in this book.

I do feel though, that some of the spells which involve common acts such as petting, talking to, and feeding your dog may be possible for quite a few dog owners and their canine companions.

It is worth noting that some people make take issue, as well, with the wording of some of the spells, calling into question if the free will of the animal at the heart of the spell is being maintained at all times.

If the wording of a given spell does not sit well with you, but you’re drawn to its general concept, consider rephrasing and/or reworking the spell so that it better aligns with your personal beliefs and practices.

As to the effectiveness of the spells themselves, that will, of course, vary from person to person, dog to dog, and circumstance to circumstance.

For example, as much as the thought of using a spell to help find a lost dog is appealing and while employing one may help, there is, of course, no guarantee that magick alone will return a pup that has run off.

As in many situations in life, it is important to balance magick with pragmatic actions specific to what it is you want to accomplish or have happen.

That said, I think that the approachable nature of most of the spells in Dog Magic will help with their success for those readers who opt to follow these workings either to the letter or who adapt them to their own needs and lives.

Is Dog Magick a good book for beginner witches?

This is not, let’s make no bones about it (dog pun intended), this is not what some might dub an “advanced magickal book”.

It is extremely beginner friendly, in my opinion, guiding the reader through each of the spells, often explaining various relevant points, and providing general witchy knowledge amongst the doggy related info.

By the same token though, it is not so entry level per se, so as to automatically put off all veteran witches, Wiccans, and other magickally guided folks.

Yes, some people will be quick to decry Dog Magic as cutesy, silly, or “fluffy bunny” (a term that I personally dislike and generally avoid using, but that is a topic for another post).

In doing so, however, I feel that one may be missing the bigger picture of this book.

Even if you were to remove all of the spells and “feel good” elements from it, the historical and cultural information relating to dogs and ancient peoples, dogs and the gods, and the importance of dogs in the lives of countless millions of people the world over today, all combine to make this an endearing and informative read.

How Dog Magick rates with me

I have a soft spot in my heart for books pertaining to animal magick, animal familiars, and animal spirit guides/allies. I’m a born animal lover and animal empath who has been working with animal magick since childhood, so I’m quite partial to books like this one.

Aside from the authors’ love and respect for their own dog and pups in general, my favourite part of this book was the fact that the subject of pet loss was discussed and treated with reverence, understanding, and compassion.

As anyone who has lost a beloved dog (or pet of any type) will tell you, having to say goodbye to an animal you cherish is one of the most excruciatingly painful and difficult things many of us will ever endure.

I wholeheartedly appreciate that the authors made a point of covering this aspect of life with a dog, devoting chapter nine to the topic.

Overall, I enjoyed Sophia and Denny’s Dog Magic. It was a quick, enjoyable read that I dove into during the Yule season. I can easily see myself returning to this book in the future – including adapting some of the spells to align with my own magickal practices.

Working on a scale of 1 – 5, with five being the highest possible rating, I would give this book 4 stars out of 5.

It is a lovely read, a welcome addition to the field of books about pet and animal magick, and a great gift for yourself or a witchy dog fan in your life.
